Onsides Kick Illegal Procedure by Alabama
Jan 12, 2016, 4:46 PM
|
|
Not that it does any good to whine about it, but I believe Alabama had at least one player outside of the nine-yard marks after the ready-for-play signal (this is on the opposite side of the field as the recovery), which is in violation of Rule 6-1-2-I-IV:
RULE 6 Kicks Section 1. Free Kicks Free Kick Formation ARTICLE 2. ... c. When the ball is kicked (A.R. 6-1-2-I-IV): ... 5. All players of Team A must have been between the nine-yard marks after the ready-for-play signal [S19].
penality - five yards from previous spot.
Amirite or amiwrong?

Sorry, but you're wrong this time. All the players were "momentarily within the 9-yard marks." However, THE GUY WHO CAUGHT THE KICK WAS OFFSIDES. Come on, Head Linesman, can you watch your assigned space? For crying out loud, the guy was almost a yard offsides!

I just haven't seen any footage where they were there for a millisecond, but I am of course no expert.

They don't have to line up inside the 9 yard marks. This rule is just to keep players from sneaking onto the field from the sideline to deceive the return team. They just need to be inside the marks when the ref blows the whistle, then they can line up wherever they want.

If you dig deep enough into the rules regarding attempts to fair catch, player positioning and allowing space to make a play on the ball etc, you can quickly conclude that there has never been a legal onside kick in NCAA play. It sucks, but I don't think it was a blown call. Just a very clever play that caught our guys up front snoozing.

Agreed - I am just responding to those who have posted that it was certainly legal.

yes this ish again. The terrible officiating and our mistakes is what lost the game...

Could we have over came the terrible refs, yes. But that doesn't change the fact that the terrible officiating did have an effect on the outcome of the game. The mistakes were inexusable, but Bama made a ton of mistakes to. Bama did not play good on defense. Bama made the same amount of mistakes we made, if not more. Do we need to get better on special teams, yes. Do we need to stop the blown coverages, yes. But teams rarely ever have a perfect game. If your going to discuss the game you have discuss every aspect. Which includes both the mistakes and the officiating. And the onsides wasn't the only bad call. One thing is for sure if it was a fairly called game, it's most likely the outcome would be different. And that's not excusing the mistakes. And finally officiating in a title game should never be that terrible. The whole game the refs looked confused as to what the rules are.

OMG. BURY THE ILLEGAL KICK NONSENSE. Y'all sound like UNC. We lost, and that wasn't the play that lost it for us. There's no excuse for a 95 yard kickoff return. The loss is on us, not the refs.

Technically the kicker was offsides

His left foot was in front of the ball prior to it being kicked.
But the game is over and done. Congratulations to Alabama. See you next year.

The kicker and holder on a free kick do not have to be behind the ball
