Riddle me this with Clemson and playoff/expansion...

[14]

I want to hear both sides of opinions.

Everyone keeps saying that an undefeated Clemson, in the ACC, would get in a 4 team playoff. I believe that. No doubt.

However, since Clemson started playing football in 1896, we have gone undefeated only 3 times... (and one of those was in 1900; we went 6-0). Why do ACC advocates want to hang their hat on Clemson going undefeated??? It's not going to happen often. I'm sorry, but I don't want us to HAVE to go undefeated to get a seat at the table. The way things are setting up for this playoff, things get very dicey if any ACC team, not just Clemson, loses a game... and God forbid that one loss come to a Wake Forest/ NC State/BC. And.. just because you're a conference champ doesn't mean you get in.

I don't care what some say, but the way the program is headed, we CAN compete in any conference. I just want Clemson's chances to be high for a 4 team playoff.. and I don't want those chances to be dictated on us having an extremely rare perfect season.

Thoughts?

This!

ACC members MUST go undefeated to be considered - I'm not convinced they'd be shoe-ins. SEC members (and possibly other conferences as well) will definitely be considered with 1 loss, as recent history has proven.

Been undefeated more times than that

Undefeated and Untied 3 times.

undefeated with no ties- 3 times.

We actually finished higher in the final polls in 1950 at 9-0-1 than in 1948 at 11-0-0

The only way you are assured to be in, in any conference is to go undefeated. Everyone is complaining about the 4 team playoff, when in all reality our chance of making a national title just improved. Now we have two extra spots that we have a possibility of filling. No one has been complaining the last few years about how unfair it is but now that our chances improve you want to complain. Just win games and the rest will take care of itself. Even Auburn got left out of the BCS championship in the SEC and you didn't see them asking to change conferences.

That was Auburn's own fault for scheduling cupcakes...

that's where SOS comes into play...

if you've been reading about the new BCS playoff format, that will part of the equation. That's where Clemson's chances will be hurt, even if we do win, to get a seat at the table.

And why would Auburn leave a conference that makes the most $$$? I wouldn't either.

SOS will be part of the selection committee process so will Conference Champions. The people in the committee will consider all teams in a major conference with 1 loss. I don't care who we play each year VT, FSU, Clemson and Miami will be considered, just like we are in the polls.

absolutely...

we'll be considered... but we won't have the best chances.

but wouldn't you agree that out of the following list...

SEC
Big12
B1G
PAC
ACC

..we are far and away the weakest link..it's not even close and as a result if both teams are 12-1 the ACC doesn't help us at all...in fact it hurts.

You don't get judged by you conference with the committee you get judged by your TEAM. They don't start the meeting by saying well lets start with the SEC teams and move our way down the list. You all are putting way to much stock into the conference discussion. If they did that do you think ND would have agreed to this format?

You get judged by SOS which is your conference...

Great post

, but we live in a world where wild card teams are let in the playoffs in every sport. People now expect to under achieve and still get the prize. It started with participation ribbons in grade school.

Great post also just remember it does us no good really to jump now but next summer would be ideal I think it would be best to take the top 4 conf champs if they are in the top 6 and then take a wildcard if only 3 or so were in the top 6. A side note we kind have to root for the coots in a way because we will always play them and need them to be ranked to help our sos a 8-4 record will do haha.

You might say that going undefeated in the ACC is about the same as going through the SEC with 1 loss, so what's the difference?

Re: undefeated with no ties- 3 times.

Also wouldnt we have to go 13-0 anyway to make the ncg so just do it with the new system and we should be in. The first time a 13-0 acc team with a top 25 sos they will expand to 6 imo

I agree...you can't base this upon going undefeated

[2]

going undefeated might be a once in a lifetime event...you have to base this upon being a one loss team or maybe even a two loss team getting in...a one loss or two loss ACC team has no shot at getting in.

ACC teams improving

We can't have Maryland like teams lay it all on the line against us and then getting blown out in out of conference games.

I'm not buying that an undefeated Clemson get seeded.

If a selection committee is the way this thing goes and their criteria is SOS or RPI with consideration for a conference champion I can see an SEC or B1G team getting seeded instead of us with one loss each. It all depends on how our conferences mate do all season.

With the additional conference game when Cuse and Pitt arrive it becomes even more difficult for us.

exactly right....you've essentially screwed the football

schools three times with this 9th game...you've added another chance to lose...you've taken away a chance to schedule an OOC game...or a home game against a lesser opponent. It's amazing how stupid the ACC office is.

2020 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg

would people please stop saying how "stupid" the ACC is?

Posted: Jun 21, 2012 2:56 PM

you act like the ACC WANTS Clemson - or FSU for that matter - to become a football power and national brand. Nothing could be further from the truth. The ACC gave that up even before they originally brought in BC. Note that they wanted to bring in Syracuse then as well - Va Tech was forced on them. Now they've got Pitt to go with their two Big East buddies.

What do you not get?! Is it so confusing to you to see that Swoffie's UNC and Duke brethren desire to cuddle up to the Liberal, elitist Northeast schools rather than go down the path of being "football factories" like the SEC? Can you not see that UNC is running from football as fast as they can go?

Do you not understand that Miami was seen as the best of both worlds, football money but also a Northeastern school?

FSU you say? Heck, FSU was an Independent for xxxx sakes - at the time of expansion FSU hadn't needed a conference for football notoriety for many years. They were thought to be the golden goose - the one that would keep on giving no matter how the rest of the ACC football went - and for the first 12 years or so, that's exactly how it panned out.

you people are football obsessed - in the ACC/Big East corner of the college athletic world, football is of minor importance.

The ACC would happily kill the Big East and become the kingpins of the College Basketball world. And then Clemson could be the basketball equivalent to Vanderbilt football in the SEC. Just another 'W' on the basketball schedule for the big boys...Swoffie would be happy with that.

Bingo!!***

or Clemson fans with their heads stuck in a cow pattie (please don't let me see!).

Look, this is easy; nothing has changed since the AP Poll of the '60's and a National Champion that was "VOTED" into office. Great answer people...take the best sport in America and reduce it to what the local typewriter jockies wanted. No they're not political, not at all.

Better yet, take a minute and call Boise. Ask them how they feel about this set-up. Ask them just how long they think it's going to be before a 10-2 SEC team gets ranked higher than an undefeated BSU Bronco team fattened up on Nevada and Cincinnati. Duh, about 10 seconds into the first bowl season, that's how long.

The intent was with the BCS AQ status, and has always been, to reduce the big games - i.e. big bowls, national championship opportunities, et al - to the big state schools and the big conferences. Boise got perenially left out of the BCS, and now even more schools are about to get left out of a 4-conference (SEC-Big12-Big10-Pac12) hegemony. All they have done is reduce the BCS from 6 conferences to 4, nothing more and nothing less.

It's the MLB set-up: only the richest teams get into the playoffs year-in and year-out, and the rich keep getting richer with more publicity, better access to talent, ever increasing control over the money.

Better yet, it's the South Carolina high school classification system with two groups of 4A schools - the BIG 16 and then the rest. Note that the winner of the Little 16 DOES NOT get a title shot at the BIG 16. This ain't your Daddy's Hoosiers' pipe dream, boys.

Bottom line: the NCAA, the BCS, the bowls, and the conferences are all private businesses, and they are acting like it by trying to reduce their competition.

If Clemson stays in the ACC (where we've been treated so well by the basketball heads at UNC and Duke for so long), then by 2050 Clemson will be in a different classification than South Carolina. The annual Gamecock-Tiger showdown will mean little more than the current Clemson-Furman warm-up we have now.

Recount, I think we did the undefeated 4 times in history. 4/0/3 in 1906, we wasn't defeated. But we did have 3 ties:)
