situational question coaches...

|

- We're down 30-28 - 1:30 on the clock - 1 Timeout left - 4th and 3 on the UNC 22 yd. line. - The ball is just inside the right hash - We've scored 4 TDs... kicked no FGs
Do you kick a 39 yarder for the win... or do you go for it?
Try to put aside snide comments, sarcasm, etc... from FSU and put yourself in that position.

It really depends.

How have we done moving the ball all game? Have we marched up and down the field? Are we in a good rhythm?
How has the kicking been throughout the game? Have we missed one already?
Lot of factors go into this decision.

I don't feel comfortable throwing my kicker, who's confidence has to be very low, into the game for his first kick in a pressure packed situation.
I'd have confidence in my O to get the yardage needed against the UNC defense.

We have enough room on the field for a play to develop, and enough time so a checkdown is a fine option even if we don't score.
If it was 30 yards or less, I may kick, but again, that depends on how well our defense is playing. And how good UNC's kicker has been.

Kick it and just hope he doesn't yank it.
We did the same thing with a cold Mark Buccholz against the Coots in '07. He had missed a FG in that game (and maybe an extra point, too), but we sent him out there to get the W.

I remember, because the first was wide left, second wide right, and the last one was right down the middle.

Thanks, I just remember thinking "Why the f are we sending him out there"...if I recall, he had missed a couple in the games leading up to the Coot game, too.
It makes more sense in a clock-expiration scenario than in this one, though I admit.

Has anyone forgotten FSU's Wide Left ? It has its own Wikipedia entry. Good Lord we are not the only team to miss a fg or 2. Kick it

you've got three kickers (I think) on scholarship and you've had a week to make sure things are corrected.
Dabo was 2-2 on 23 yarders....... right?

York; that's far too easy! The solution is you call in Rita Rotten Crot.. and she drop kicks it thru the goal posts and the crowd goes crazy. You kick the field goal

Now for a real assessment. How did we score those 4 TD's? What are a rough idea of our running and passing yards? Wind or not on the field goal, weather clear or rainy?? Have they been moving the ball on us easily or has it been difficult? My point is that you have to have all the factors . The ones you gave were fine but simply not thorough enough.
Having said that if pressed, I'd kick the field goal since if we went for it and missed, game over. If we missed FG chances are game over also. If my field goal kicker was ANY good, it's the best percentage shot to win the game.
