shaq smith

Has all the physical tools you could ever want

The problem has been upstairs. BV obviously hasn't trusted him as much as others... even a freshman, Skalski, has received more playing time lately. From what I've read, his defense in high school was as complex as "see ball, get ball", so that could have something to do with it.

I think he is going to be a good player his last year or two. Not every 5* is totally ready to step in and contribute immediately. Plus BV asks a ton of his LBs.

he played at IMG as a senior. think their D would be fairly complex. but agree it simply takes more time for some kids.. stars be ######.. than others.

Stephone Anthony took a similar path to becoming a starter

He was terrific for us his last year and it led to being a high NFL draft pick.

Just be patient.

He will turn into a DOD type of dominant LB soon enough.

A little bit different scenario...

Dec 14, 2017, 11:26 AM [ in reply to Stephone Anthony took a similar path to becoming a starter ]

Anthony saw the field early as a true Fr and So, but the light really came on his Jr year and he was a stud in '13 and '14

Yeah I think he's got just a little bit of Lateek Townsend in him. Great physical tools, good head on his shoulders, needs to learn the defense. Playing linebacker isn't as easy as "go get the ball" at the college level.

People ...

Dec 14, 2017, 11:25 AM

He's only a RS freshman. LB is the hardest position to learn on that side of the ball....it's a new position for him and he is going through the normal growing pains. Has contributed on special teams but may make more of an impact next year

Remember, O'Daniel didn't really see much of the field until his RS Junior year

lol what a joke. He's played great when he's in and I'm confident he'll get more PT in the next 2 years but we've been DEEP at LB since he's got here. He'll get his turn. He and Tre are beast.

Amen. And not only that, but BV expects more out of his backers than other coaches, and puts more on them. It’s hard to player LB in his system. Shaq will get it and will be a stud one day.

I empathize with the OP. It is odd not seeing a 5* on the field contributing early... but then, you look up and down our roster and see it is packed full of 4 & 5* kids.
