regarding the call on Smith...

Nov 7, 2014, 11:07 AM

has anyone mentioned the fact that if Smith had not gone UP to hit the receiver in the chest, and instead, hit him straight on in the legs, it could/would have been much worse. with that kind of force at his knee area, it could have broken his leg or flipped the guy over and he could have landed on his neck. I think this call was awful all around but i also think that they make these calls based on a "blanket" rule that ALL high hits are "targeting". in this case, the hit was actually as clean as it could be. the only way that it could have been better would be to back off and not hit at all.... thus, ending the idea of 'football' as we know it.

just my thoughts

The ONLY thing I can think of was the fact that he left his feet to make the hit. Seems like that was a point of emphsis. I looked the rule up quickly last night and everything I read only mentioned launching (leaving your feet) in reference to using the crown of the helmet. Just my $0.02. Still think it was a bad call.
