I'm debating on buying a house, but I'm not sure how I'll like a mortgage payment. The way I figure it though, is that it's better than just throwing money away on rent.

If you are in a good job you like and can grow with, have the 20% down payment, and find something you like. Go for it.
I like my house, it is almost perfect for me except the lack of garage or backyard. The reason I hate owing a home is I hate my job. If I were simply renting, I could pay some exit fee and walk away from everything else.
If you'd have to do a 3% fha loan for the house, don't do it. PMI sucks.

I've got until the spring to live where I'm at, but I've got to make a move soon. I really wouldn't mind being closer to work anyway, and Greenville has a lot more going on for me than Clemson does at this point. I've just been having to weigh the pros and cons of owning vs. renting, and as of now I feel like buying is the way to go.

Rather than throwing money away on a water heater repair, door jamb rot, paint, garbage disposal is clogged again....grass needs cutting, hedges need trimming...
etc.

I'll be dead before its ever paid off, but I don't really care. I'll probably sell and buy something else anyway before then.
