Another installment of "ring ceremony"

Apr 18, 2018, 11:11 AM

Back when I got mine, the "ceremony" was held under Harcombe at the bookstore.

"Hey..can you check to see if my ring came in?"

(hungover book store employee hands me a little box, tells me to sign a piece of paper)

"Well..I guess it fits, sorta. Thanks"

Go up one flight of stairs to get a sandwich at the loggia cafe, then head over to Martin hall for class.

Though I suppose a fair study should be done to examine added value.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Added value?

Apr 18, 2018, 12:39 PM

In 1998 when I graduated, I took a job making $35k (which was on the lower end of what a lot of my friends were making---they studied harder, such is life).

That's about $53k in today's dollars. You really think the average Clemson student (who is now leaving with mid-5 figures in debt versus me with virtually none) is getting $53k for their first gig?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. I started at $17,500 my first job in 1980, butt

Apr 18, 2018, 1:06 PM

plug that into an inflation calculator and it equals $56K/year now. Good lord, I was rich. Had a nice apartment at $225/month, and that included all utilities including cable TV. Plus, we didn't have as many bills back then... no cell phone, internet, etc. I was making more money than I knew what to do with... ate out every meal and threw money around town like it grew on trees. I remember getting paid twice a month, and I'd stick a Ben Franklin in savings from every check. That's $200/month... I'm living like a king and saving the equivalent of $700 every month in today's dollars.

shift a little. In my community here, I'm seeing a lot of families that are upper middle class, but are choosing to send their kid to a community college for free (Tennessee promise program) for two years and then transfer credits to a university for their final two years. Guarantee you they wouldn't have even considered that route 10-15 years ago.

They've tested the price elasticity of a college education pretty well, and I think they have, or are about to cross a red line with a lot of people.

Apr 18, 2018, 4:42 PM [ in reply to Added value? ]

I went back to Clemson in 2008.

At the time I was making 45k a year, but taking 3 years off and going 30k into debt were the prudent moves, and my first Job out of school started me at 68k, then I moved on to my next one which got me into the 80's, and up to the 90's before I left for California and a significant pay bump.

Just LOL. Coincides with the increase in state scholarships from lottery and the #1 Public College ranking. I remember that first big increase, people were flipping out. Now they do it every year, $1k each time.

Dude came in hellbent to make the public university ranking his calling card and he turned the place into a country club to do so.

It would be awesome if job recruiters were now trying to choose between going to Clemson or Stanford's job fair, but they're not....not much has changed on the output side for graduates that I can tell.

Apr 18, 2018, 1:39 PM

2002-2003 - 15%
2003-2004 - 19%
2004-2005 - 13%
2005-2006 - 13%

These are the outliers and the exact time Greenr was there. The rest are 3-7% usually (86-87 was 14% or $240)
