and, because she hasn't been around as much as she'd like to be, thinks there are undue influences in Robert's life that are replacing the appropriate influences (like her). Not saying she's right to act that way, but I don't think you can say that the way she acts means she doesn't care about her son.

she hadn't been around at all, I think that's the indicator. She shows up when her son is the center of the universe, recruiting wise. Why would the both of her children being in the same place bring the family closer when they went to high school together and she was never there?
