Do you gain or lose weight after a fart?

May 28, 2020, 7:15 AM

That’s pretty much it. I woke up thinking about this and it’s bothering me.

if you're pushing it out. Heck might be if it slips out too, even if you hold it in, your body is moving, which burns calories.

How could you gain weight by farting I wonder.

You’re close to what I was thinking. If the fart gas is mostly methane and hydrogen, then it is definitively less dense than the nitrogen rich air. So while you may lose some mass, you will also become less buoyant, in which case gravity mass affect you more

are you a dr?

This is outside the current knowledge of modern medicine

walked right to the toilet and dropped some serious heat (at least 2 flushes worth)...and went back to the scale and weight and had gained 1.5 lbs. I didn't eat or drink anything in the brief time between this sequences of events.

How does THAT happen?!?!

I'd only see losing weight if somehow the fart had more substance than just methane.

I’m not talking eight that your bathroom scale would pick up, just troubled by the physics.

Methane and hydrogen are less dense than nitrogen rich air, so while you might lose an imperceptible amount of mass, I have to wonder if you become more dense and less buoyant, thereby increasing gravity’s impact and increasing weight.

Stick to topics of substance...

And shy away from vapor...that's the media's territory!
