must be considered "homegrown" if he bypassed the draft

Jan 12, 2015, 7:14 PM

Under MLS rules, if a guy played for one of their Academies affiliated with the club, that player can be designated a "homegrown" player and sign directly with the club...the idea is to put a premium on youth-player development, and offer MLS clubs incentive to spend their own money developing young talent. Sound like he got in that way.

Would have been a great deal for him a couple years ago when RSL was at their peak and contending for MLS titles...but I guess there's a ton of opportunity for him now, because RSL had an aging roster, a lot of guys coming out of contract, and definitely needs to rebuild with young players.

Best of luck to him. RSL has been one of the top outfits in MLS almost since its inception.

Under MLS rules they have no rules. They do what they want to do.

I'm not an expert on soccer, but do enjoy it. I think the academies are how most of the European teams do it, you progress through the ranks and there are a lot of them.

Big reason there is a big talent level gap between the US and the world, although our national team is doing much better.

Good for these guys though, and I went to the last 4 or 5 home matches through the ACC and NCAA tourney and it was phenomenal.

Awesome glad to see more Tigers getting into the league.

Thomas McNamara is now with NYCFC hopefully he has recovered from his ACL tear.
