Poll, should the south secede?

Jan 2, 2013, 11:23 PM

NC, Sc, Tenn, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas would form its own separate union and have absolutely no obligation to pay taxes to the federal government, nor be responsible for the current $16 trillion deficit. However, all money paid into social security will be forfeited. You get to self govern in any way you like and are free from any debt burden by the United states Federal government. Any State by State deficits are your own responsibility.

To be fair, I gave you Florida, major tourist hub with several major cities and a huge coastline, so you can not have Texas. Please vote yeah or neigh on this allotment and do not assume any other states, except Kentucky and West Virginia. You can have them too.

that is fine and all, but lets stick to the rules. Besides, Texas has a huge border issue with Mexico, you would have to pay taxes to maintain it. I know how you all are against taxes.

There's a shitload of Florida Crackers that I would put up against any redneck from South Carolina. And the state, as a whole, gets a bad rap because of Miami-Dade (much like how upstaters in New York hate NYC, the rest of Florida really doesn't like the Broward/Miami-Dade crowd...)

Let's swap Florida for Virginia. It is a much better state.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Red States are way more responsible for the deficit as they

Jan 3, 2013, 8:17 AM

are net takers, while blue states are payers. The rest of the country would be better off without them.

Of course, there will be a massive diaspora of people out of the new confederacy - all those with the means and affluence to get out.

Actually daj, those stats are...

Jan 3, 2013, 5:36 PM [ in reply to Red States are way more responsible for the deficit as they ]

quite misleading. Consider my company which reports all of it's federal income out of Illinois. 95% of the actual engineering and manufacturing is in the south. Only a very small portion of the money is actually made in IL but all the taxes are reported from there. If such a separation did occur, I'd imagine much of those taxes (although admittedly less) would be collected in the individual states where the production is thereby changing the dynamic significantly. Oh yeah, most BLUE states would be broke by end of first quarter every year.

Just my two cents.

that is brilliant Tom, Please proceed with that incredibly faulty and ###### up logic. Consider the ineffective manor in which our current house of representatives conducts itself, and apply that malfeasance upon all the local governing bodies. It would be a giant clusterfck.

Secession would be far more effective in depolarizing an unstable government.

Under your brilliant plan, we could very well end up a collection of 3rd world countries fighting over the resources held by a handful of states. Let's not consider how we re-structure our economy and military assets and blindly follow your plan.

Jan 3, 2013, 11:38 PM

We are mostly South... granted, Northern Virginia is like New Jersey though ....

And what about WEST Virginia? ... they got lots of coal and gas ... need coal and gas

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

+1, a few of you southern folk have brains ;)

Jan 4, 2013, 4:11 AM

You can have southern Virginia(we will call that the Neutral Zone), Northern has a high concentration of government agencies like Quantico, the US fish and wildlife service, and the NSF. You do not expect my taxes to pay for them to move do you? You would also have to fight for the mouth of the Mississippi. Louisiana harbors a major port city and all the US natural gas pipelines converge there. I am surprised nobody argued for Louisiana to join your confederacy, but possibly you could lob cannon balls from southern Arkansas to make this interesting. :)

-signed predator drones.

Read further down the thread, you were given West Virginia. You would have coal and all the quartz and copper mines in Tennessee. Outside of that, you have limited natural resources for trade, unless Arkansas Paper Mills and South Carolina Chicken farms are considered.

"The New South" would also have limited trade infrastructure and one measly oil refinery in Gulfport Miss., and such would become dependent on the USA for Gasoline, whether domestic or imported.. Also consider that our Shale Basins barely overlap into West Virginia and Arkansas and nowhere else in the south are there easily attainable Natural Gas deposits. Enjoy the coal while it lasts.

Next..Have fun feeding your chickens and limited cattle stock on farm raised fish guts and their own dead carcasses. Our taxes pay for the tremendous grain subsidies that keep food prices down. You would have no states in the grain belt, (see diagram below.)

Food Shortages in Urban areas would be a huge concern, and thus easily exploited by the free market. When you combine inflated gas prices with the added cost of feeding livestock, $10 per lb ground beef would be the norm. If you do not believe me ask Japan, they would consider that a good deal.

-signed the grain and energy subsidies you no longer pay into.

Lastly, You may get a good deal on a few slightly used F35's, but you are on your own with nuclear Subs and aircraft carriers. And as mentioned by ATLOrange, any member of our current military that chooses to defect to the "New South", would be extradited on charges of treason, thus you would have to recruit and train your own pilots.

So...I imagine you will have to collect some taxes to build your second rate military and establish your trade infrastructure..(Oil refineries are not cheap)

But as a reminder to what you turned your back on, the US can park a couple of aircraft carriers off the the Coast of SC to remind you of who is in charge..

we can get into your healthcare conundrum, food shortages, and lack of quality public education later...

Welcome to the 3rd world :)

I don't hate south Carolina, nor its people. but I do despise its politics.

and this thread has nothing to do with SC, I am not sure where you got that from. If anything, I am flicking my chin at those who despise government, far from hatred. some people need to stop and think about what they are really asking for and the consequences involved.

Hey ! How 'Bout We Grab All The "Red" States?

Jan 4, 2013, 8:45 AM [ in reply to +1, a few of you southern folk have brains ;) ]

Indiana, for example, is "red", they are de facto like the South, plus they got lots of grain and cattle and Notre Dame and a B10 school! (granted, a basketball school) ...

That will take care of the food argument. Any withdrawl would include all the infrastructure and assets, since Norfolk is in Virginia we would get the the 2nd Fleet!, and the 4th Fleet is based in Florida! We would have a biatch'in military out of the blocks !

Your hand-picked states do not represent political reality. Your country would include California, oregon and Washington New England and the mid atlantic.

Florida, Iowa, Wisconsin Virginia , Minnesota and Michigan would be partitioned amongst others...... Most of the West, Plains and Midwest would be ours as would Alaska.

Legions of Demos would crowd into your urban and coastal nirvanna.
