If ACC continues in its present direction

Oct 14, 2019, 4:11 PM

Then CLEMSON needs to be even smarter in attempting to schedule big time programs over some of the current smaller teams we play in order to showcase bigger perceived wins. We have to outwork others on this. Put Central Florida on the schedule -- they want to prove themselves as big time -- or even throw in a middle or bottom SEC team to show similar opponents and how CLEMSON would fare playing them vs other SEC teams. I know -- here comes we can't do that because it would mean giving up a home game, etc. Then find a way to make schedule not so easy to attack by others. We got a lot of smart people at Clemson. ACC is dragging us down like an anchor right now. JMO. Go Tigers!!!!!

Until the national media is able to present facts, and not some Bull Shid narrative they want everyone to believe, we could schedule and beat NFL teams and still would not be worth a shid in the media's eye.

Exactly!

Re: If ACC continues in its present direction

Why?

By the time those scheduled games arrive, the ACC will be equal to all other national powers again.

Meanwhile, the UCFs of the world will be back to being only semi-relevant.

Remember Boise St? They were/are the most successful Group of 5 team ever, yet their victory over FSU this year was an "upset." That game was scheduled when both programs mattered.

Stop panicking, and stop listening to the detractors. I challenge you to watch more ACC football. These programs are incredibly athletic, innovative, well-coached and often very cerebral (the last 3 descriptions cannot be used about the SEC.)

Yes, the conference is down. Numerous formerly successful programs had to retool in order to compete on the same level as the national champions. And even when they do well, they haven't developed the player and coaching depth to succeed consistently.

But there is huge progress being made at Louisville, Wake, Duke, Pitt, UVA, and UNC. But none of your SEC friends will care because our traditional power schools like VT, Miami and FSU are still struggling. So your friends are ignorant. Take advantage of it.

Just bet the ACC schools in the postseason-not the SEC--and use your winnings on something that will make them jealous.

Interesting theory but if you look at history, there’s more championships in the ACC than the SEC... if you include ND. We should give them an ultimatum, all in or all out. But big boy football is in the ACC history. One thing that really holds the ACC up is the lack of resources and fan support from a bunch of the teams.

BC’s been relevant
Pitt
Cuse
VT
UNC
Clemson
Ga Tech
Fla St
Miami
NCState to a limited extent
ND

So really just Duke
Louisville
Wake
UVA that have little to no history.

Very comparable to SEC
Scar
Vandy
Mizzou
Kentucky
Arkansas
Miss St

Exactly, schedule bottom tier SEC opponents to point out the irony of it all.

I respectfully disagree.

I don’t think the ACC is dragging us down at all. The CFP hasn’t penalized us for playing in the ACC. If the media wants to, that’s fine, because their opinion doesn’t really matter.

Clemson plays at least one, and usually two SEC teams every year. We are guaranteed the game against SC. This year and last, we played A&M. Prior to that, we played Auburn. We’ve played Georgia recently as well. We’ve also played Notre Dame recently, and will continue to as part of ND’s arrangement with the ACC. Those are quality out of conference opponents.

The non-conference games, as you know, are often scheduled many years in advance. It’s hard to know who will be good 8-12 years down the road. Plus, those games frequently get canceled for one reason or another. We were supposed to do a home and home with Oklahoma but that got canceled. Now it’s rescheduled for years down the road.

Much in the same way, we can’t control how good the rest of the ACC is. It’s obviously a “down” period with FSU, Miami, and Virginia Tech all down compared to their recent histories. Those programs are likely to bounce back soon.

In the same vein, the SEC is perceived as strong now, but there are no guarantees that LSU, Georgia, Florida, etc. will remain good. They could hit a slump soon just as the ACC has recently.

The ACC is still a solid football conference. And it isn’t hurting Clemson one bit. It didn’t hurt FSU when they were the nation’s top program either.

If we continue going in the Dabo direction I am afraid that scheduling OOC quality opponents will become harder and harder .
You see , nobody wants to get shelled by the media before the season's even warmed up all just for getting shellacked by a finesse Clemson team from a weak ACC that just keeps winning National Championships .
It's a tough sell .

Not too many teams are going to come out of the SEC and play Clemson OOC. I wish some other ACC teams would schedule ACC and begin to build the football brand. I think they will. No place but up to go from here as a Conference.

Re: If ACC continues in its present direction

Just for fun, find a site that ranks all 130 NCAA teams. Write down all the out of conference games that the ACC has lost. Then write down all the out of conference games that the SEC has lost.
When a conference gets consistently ranked higher than other conferences due to bias, it helps their strength of schedule look a lot better. The only way to look at the conference as a whole is to see how they do when they play other conferences.
The SEC teams as a whole have lost to much inferior teams than the ACC teams as a whole. I think the difference will shock you. It gives an insight as to why the SEC and ESPN work so hard to put forth the narrative of the SEC superiority. The ACC has won 3 out of the last 6 national championships. Nobody ever talks about that. Look at the head to head between the SEC and the ACC for the last several years.
I believe that the SEC is a better conference than the ACC, only due to the fact that they have several teams that are good. Not as good as the media says, but their top 4 are better than our top 4. However, as a whole, the SEC may be a worse conference than the ACC. Especially if you are in the SEC East, a good team has a pretty easy schedule.

Re: If ACC noncon losses were compared to SEC

Oct 15, 2019, 12:50 PM

^^^This exactly.

2018 was different. That year, the SEC had the highest combined winning pctg in the recorded history of major college football at 51-4 in noncon games. (Conference games are a wash, so only noncon matters when combining records.)

The ACC was horrible out of conference, with only one team besides Clemson winning out of conference against a P5 school. IDK how many noncon games we (ACC) lost, but it was at least 15.

However, this year 2019 has been different. While a couple SEC schools have--SO FAR--been really impressive, the middle and bottom of the conference has really dropped. The entire conference has already lost 11 nonconference games with several more expected.

Consider this: SoCar will probably go 1-3 out of conference this year. In order to go bowling, they will need to go 5-3 in SEC play. If they do, what will that tell you about the quality of their SEC competition? 1-3 noncon,
compared to 5-3 in con??
