is it even possible to be serious for a minute?

I kinda doubt it. But I'll throw this out there anyway. How can anyone embrace either one of these candidates with a straight face? Seriously. No, seriously. I don't know what to even think. This election is the damnedest thing I've ever seen in my life, and it's not even close. And I'm 59 years old. I cannot imagine what would come in second for shock factor. I cannot even imagine discussing it seriously, as intelligent adults, with fully developed brain stems.
It would be as though... the College Football Playoff is announced, and the final four is Buffalo, Kent St, Idaho, and Santa Clara. And all the talking heads on ESPN are pretending that this is a legitimate group of contenders. And everybody is talking about them in a serious way... debating the particulars... strength of schedule, style points, victory margin, etc. And you're standing there going... uh, excuse me, all of these teams blow donkey meat. Not only are they not contenders for the nat'l title, these are perhaps the worst teams I've ever seen.
But it doesn't matter. Every day you turn on the TV or pick up the newspaper, and these teams are being pimped by their respective supporters. And they're not lukewarm at all... they're enthusiastic. Day after day you stand there, thinking... is this real? A dream? A nightmare? Seriously? The dialogue is really about whether Idaho or Buffalo is the best team in the nation? Is it only me? Have I lost my mind? Or is everybody else crazy? Does it even matter any more?
Is it really just me??? Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump?? President of the USA?? My God....

I recognized that politics is the circus which politicians are providing to keep our minds occupied while they violate our freedom and steal our incomes for their personal gain. I concluded this about a decade ago. I felt the same way about McCain-Obama and Rommney-Obama you feel about this election.
Frankly, I'm just not playing anymore.

We have gotten what we collectively asked for. Talking about policy in any depth gets a candidate no where. Taking about locking their opponent up, or groping or calling each other names gets them everywhere.

but have different ideas for how we should get there. We choose instead to assume the worst in our political rivals. We choose to explain how smart people can see the world differently than we do by assigning nefarious purpose or motive. In this way we can explain to ourselves how a smart person could disagree with us.
Of course I mean this collectively.

couldn't agree more...definitely the worst choices and the worst election season in our lifetimes.. i'm barely younger than you
but i still see it as:
HRC as President? scary and troublesome to say the least
Trump as President? unthinkable... beyond frightening

Presidential candidate, I would cut him out of my will.
When he asked why, I explained that just by being in that position, I would know that my own flesh and blood had to have done some shady, illegal, unethical, depraved things to get there, and that I'd have to disown him.
