Stupid Mike Martin will make sure that Greenville never sees the ACC tourney again!

not many from down south will. its tough to get vacation

Tool. There is alumni in more than just SC you know.

May 17, 2006, 2:39 PM [ in reply to Guess the ACC is ready to see some of the poorest ]

Actually the NE contingent is rather large. And thats just Clemson.

Baseball fans with no ties to the ACC might show up, its a 30,000 + seat stadium.. whats jacksonville.. bet it aint that big.. and 2009.. may be one of the last years for the fen anyways.

must be a closet yank fan.

Charlotte should be the home of the basketball tourney and

the baseball tourney. Just seems like it would easy to get to for most schools. At least the ones that travel well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The baseball tournament was in Charlotte a few years ago

May 17, 2006, 1:56 PM

Ticket sale and attendance fell well short of expectations so I doubt it goes back any time soon.

You're right...

May 17, 2006, 2:06 PM

if revenue, attendance, and ticket sales were critical factors, the tournament would have never left Greenville and it certainly would not have been held in Durham or Virginia.

Once the contract with Jacksonville expires, I'll bet it ends up in Greensboro for several years.

Charlotte, Greensboro, DC and Landover and my favorite is in Greensboro. With the new place in Charlotte, maybe that would change my view.

But everything else points to Greensboro....maybe because I only want to see basketball and could care less about anything else. I like the fact of having the most central location possible and having the event in a smaller market where it gets all the focus and attention.

The SEC only withdrew their support of the boycott a year or two ago. At that time, the ACC was still "honoring" it, too.

The Drive may not have even bid for the tournament

May 17, 2006, 2:20 PM

All they have said is that they want to host college games, maybe have a Palmetto State tournament, but that is it.

As far as the size goes, I figure that artificial scarcity is important to a privately financied stadium, rather than to have, say 10,000 seats that would only be sat in a few times a year.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Semper constans, numquam praedici

Once the "newness" dies down on the Drive.....

May 17, 2006, 2:26 PM [ in reply to West End Field isn't as big as the old stadium.*** ]

it will go back to decent crowds. I never bought the argument that attendance lacked at the Braves games b/c the stadium was 'hard to get to' or 'nothing to do around it'. Those are excuses for "Nobody cares." IMO, there really isn't a need for a large stadium in downtown. A really nice smaller stadium is better I think. Why are Clemson games packed all the time? Clemson is 'hard to get to' with 'not much to do' right? People go to Clemson games b/c they love Clemson and love baseball. People in Greenville have no affiliation with the Drive. I know people will criticize my opinion but that is okay.

In regards to the ACC tourney in Boston, that would be fun. I would love to see my Tigers at Fenway. I will make that trip. I don't care about attendance, the ACC making money, etc. If it ends up being real bad money-maker, it won't be back so that is another reason to go.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

you hit it on the size in Greenville

May 17, 2006, 2:28 PM

but the affiliation will come after they're there a while possibly. They definitely needed a new stadium wherever it was.

They intentionally left the size smaller when they built it and they still have some expansion room on the LF line where the terrace is.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yep, artificial scarcity is a key for private investors

May 17, 2006, 2:33 PM

Unlike a government stadium, it made no sense for the Drive to build a 10,000 seat stadium. They make more money off of luxury suites than the seated bowl anyhow.

Now if the Drive's attendance keeps up and is like the downtown stadium in Greensboro that has sell-outs, three years into its existence, then you might see a move to expand the place, but at the moment, the stadium is a money maker where it is.
