I STILL can't get into soccer

Dec 21, 2019, 2:02 AM

You soccer fans - I'm sorry.

I've tried for several decades, but it still bores me to death. My son played for 8 years too. That was "okay" and since he played well - I had a dog in the fight; a reason to go. The wins were fine, but I enjoyed his (American) football & baseball games a lot more.

(American) football is the greatest game ever invented. Fast-paced (except for TV timeouts & constant reviews), action-packed - exciting to the point of being teeth clinching. Offensively & defensively - fans don't have to wait too long for great OR disastrous things to happen. Even so, momentum swings keep it gripping most of the time.

Basketball - same thing - even faster.

Baseball can have its lulls, but it can break wide open - and what a chess match!

Soccer - you can watch for 2 or 3 hours & often see a 1-0 or 0-0 game (and maybe a pretty crappy overtime system to get a winner).

It's so big around the world, & I don't get it. American football, basketball & baseball are FAR better entertainment. They've been trying for years to cram soccer down our throats, & based on attendance, it hasn't worked - don't think it EVER will.

Last thing - from a PRO standpoint - how can anyone care about a sport controlled by an embarrassingly corrupt entity like FIFA? When you say FIFA, you might as well say "the Russian mafia" or "the Mexican drug cartels."

I've tried & tried but can't be a soccer fan. If you're one - more power to ya. For me, I'll take bowling, tennis, golf - about anything over soccer.

1) But rank it aa NCAA is the best until pay for play changes the entire environment!!

2) College Football is the best game in world for purist!!

3) Humble players still exist!!

Sports as we know them escape our future, the great stories for our kids and grandkids die by 2022. That said, fairness in the monetary gain from better known players vs vs 4th string kicker will never allow equal opportunities

Soccer is a great sport for children. My son played it as a youngster along with basketball (which is his real passion).

When it comes to following it, the World Cup is the only thing that has my interest. I find the pure passion of it is incredible. Here in Houston, USA vs. Mexico matches (friendly or not) also draw a lot of attention.

Soccer won't gain traction in the USA until our very best athletes start pursuing it AND play in a US Soccer league (like MLS).

It seems American football, baseball and basketball together don't leave enough room for soccer to grab much mind share in this country. I don't see that changing any time soon.

it’s the beautiful game

Dec 21, 2019, 7:48 AM

The only sport that goes 90 minutes with minimal stoppage.

Not quite sure how you get “action packed” from a sport with 12 minutes of play in a 60 minute period.

It’s okay that you don’t get it

It’s not about the scoring, it’s all about the build up and stretching the field. The boring parts where they are passing wider and further are the equivalent to establishing the run game to open up the passing attack.

This club World Cup is a great time to be watching, it’s more cohesive than national teams

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's more action in those 12 minutes than the entire 90

trips down the field, there is a turnover! To me, that is a big problem! Make the field smaller and the goals bigger, and the game would be greatly improved!

But football already has the best balance of offense

Dec 22, 2019, 9:49 AM

and defense of all the sports.

Basketball - offense dominated

Soccer - defense dominated (or offense is just anemic)

Baseball is second to football in balance.

Hockey is defensive but the speed and action of the game provide more entertainment than the flopping in soccer and basketball and butt-picking of baseball so I find it the second best spectator sport.

The defense in soccer is the start of the offense

Dec 22, 2019, 11:04 AM

And the offense also plays defense.

That’s the beauty, the entire team does all of it.

Soccer is MUCH more entertaining than baseball...it’s not even close.

Calling football fast paced compared to soccer is just asinine...one has continuous action for 45 minutes at a time and the other has constant stopping and extended tv timeouts, play reviews, etc.

I have a friend that is a rugby fan (from S Africa) and he can’t understand how we sit through football games...says there’s not enough action. I tried to get him to Death Valley but he isn’t interested at all. I did get him to a soccer match at Riggs though.

I have caught myself watching rugby if I spot it on tv. One day I will have to figure out the rules. I definitely have the confused. ??

Soccer is something I watch during the Olympics and I occasionally catch a Clemson game, but the truth is....I don't love it.

Dec 21, 2019, 5:40 PM [ in reply to Re: I STILL can't get into soccer ]

It is on TV because they focus the cameras on the ball. Live you can see what the field is doing but anyone who doesn't understand the 3rd baseman's job with one on first and a grounder hit in deep second baseman's territory probably should try to keep up anyway.

the individual plays are but the games themselves are probably 20 or so minutes of action in a 3 1/2 hour broadcast. It's like 90% downtime and that's one of the major reasons it hasn't grown faster internationally.

ideally It would be a golden goal scenario

Dec 22, 2019, 11:13 AM

but since the players are actually running the whole time it can’t last indefinitely like a baseball game.

PKs are a great way to decide the outcome. Plus all the “I want more scoring” people get to see a few goals in a short amount of time.

I’ve been on the winning and losing side of a shootout and it’s awesome and terrible at the same time.

Start betting on it and you will find it more interesting lol. I enjoy watching soccer but certainly not as much as football or basketball. I pulled to the Galaxy the last 2 years and did seem to care a good bit but not like watching a Clemson football, basketball, or baseball game. I want to get emotionally invested in a club in all the league's but it is hard for me to.

Re: I STILL can't get into soccer

Dec 22, 2019, 4:20 AM

First we have to acknowledge that not everyone likes the same things, and one man's meat is another man's poison. For example, you seem to enjoy the fast paced sport of basketball. I find it very dull. Too much scoring, in any sport there should be some difficulty placed on earning points/runs/goals. And too many stopages and timeouts, sometimes the last two minutes of a game can take about 20 minutes to complete.

However, taking your post in good faith, as a sport's nut who actively follows about a dozen sports, I will attempt to explain my love of Association Football (that hereafter I will call Soccer to avoid confusion with other forms of football).

As with most things, it helps if you have "skin in the game". If it's your local club representing your town/city, if it's where your Dad took you every Saturday afternoon when you were a kid, if you have developed that tribal loyalty, it helps in your love of any sport.

One thing Soccer has above most sports, is the rarity value of a goal. Usually you only get 2 or 3 in a game. There is a thrill and excitement to seeing something which will probably decide the outcome of the game, but happens rarely, which other sports lack (no point getting excited in a basket for your team in the NBA when there's another 40 of them coming in the next 47 minutes .

I love that this sudden excitement can often come out of nowhere. With many sports, you can see the score coming from a distance, although it is exciting to see a Running Back break the line, as he goes past the last man, he often wil have 20 or 30 yards still to go, so that shock moment of a sudden shot beating a keeper is missing.

I love the pace of it, the lack of timeouts, its lack of formula, the way possession can change quickly and often, and that a player in possession has a full range of options to dispose of the ball through 360 degrees. There's the athleticism that some sports lack, and it allows all the players to look balletic, to dive through the air, to jump, to slide, to run, to tackle with a poise and grace that many sports lack e.g. I love Ice Hockey, but there are certain times when a group of playewrs can look like glorified road sweepers.

I loove the tactical side of the game. The way some teams press, others sit back, some man mark, other splay zonal. Formations of 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-2-1, 4-4-1-1-, 3-5-2, 4-2-2-2,5-3-1-1, 3-4-3 etc etc, the ways a Manager can set up his team, and change it within a game are endless, and can have a huge impact on the result. Yet at the same time, a superb goalkeeping performance, can overcome a vastly superior team. In most sports the better team wins, the possibility of an underdog having his day is small in College Football.

I'm sure I could go on for days, but there you have it for now. I don't expect you to become a lover of Soccer, but I hope this helps you understand why I love it.

i don’t think American soccer coverage ever did a good job

Dec 22, 2019, 1:08 PM

Of impressing upon the audience the tactics and strategy, giving Americans the wrong idea that it is a simple sport. And most Americans don’t play it past the youth level so they never get the tactical instruction in training.

I watched and followed the game since I was a kid in the early 2000s and only started hearing about the layered tactic discussions on the nbc premier league coverage a couple years ago.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I STILL can't get into soccer

Dec 22, 2019, 1:03 PM

It will pass baseball in popularity very soon. Think it was 1% less views this past year with several more teams being added to the league in big TV markets the next few years.

It will never touch football. Potentially could nip at the heals of bball if the MLS improves its level of play. I love soccer, played my whole life. But I rarely watch the MLS. I watch the EPL every Saturday and Sunday though. Watching an EPL game then watching MLS is equivalently to watching Division 1 vs Division 2 football. The skill, speed of play, and just overall talent is just not quite there. It would take a lot of change to get MLS to that point to be able to realistically compete but I hopeful it will eventually happen.

I will say if your traveling in London go catch a game. It’s another level of passion, and could potentially change your mind.
