What do you all think about Kendrick fair catching the KO's?

Jan 8, 2019, 1:38 PM

I've been a proponent of doing this all year - I think the math works out better getting the ball on the 25 every time.

After the fumble least week? I believe it was a great decision by the coaches to mandate he make fair catches.

Also, BJ Potter putting the kickoffs in the end zone was huuuuge. Alabama was #1 on kick returns.

The coaching staff has decided that special teams

is a good place to lose a game, so they have been conservative all year.

Also see ... punt blocks.

I think he learned his lesson after the close call

Against Notre dame. He wasn’t going to take a chance unless he was confident that he could get past the 25 yard line.

Everyone with a prolific offense should do that.

Jan 8, 2019, 1:47 PM

I'd rather see a return 6 but had we turned the ball over we would have provided a breath of fresh air to Bama's team. Dabo has taken a lot of criticism over the years for odd decisions. Often called nothing more than a cheerleader but he's made few mistakes.

so. Field position is critical against good teams and no reason to gamble at any point in that game

Kickoff returns are going away, and it won't be long

Jan 8, 2019, 1:53 PM

I'm not sure you can eliminate onsides kicks altogether, to allow for onsides kicks, but there may come a time when they are all automatic touchbacks/fair catches, if they are possessed by the receiving team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was jumbled, sorry.

I think it's the right move pretty much 100% of the time

Jan 8, 2019, 2:10 PM

unless you have an absolute game-breaking return man. If CJ Spiller was back there i wouldn't have a problem with him returning it from around the goal line. Outside of that, the negatives of returning the kick just outweigh the positives by too much. You can fumble, you can get a holding or block in the back penalty, and you frequently get stopped short of the 25 yard line anyway.

Jan 8, 2019, 2:16 PM

Good call. Prior to the season starting, I thought that rule change might help us against a team like Bama and hurt us against everyone else. Didn't we have awful field position last year vs Bama (or was that 2016)?

Turns out, I think TL and this offense could have started at our 10 every time and had about the same result. Still, yeah, it was the right call by the staff.

And not a single blocking in the back penalty putting us in a hole!

I liked it. Thought it was smart. Can't understand why teams don't routinely do it. More often than not, seems like teams are trying to get a big return & don't get much beyond the 20.

Re: What do you all think about Kendrick fair catching the KO's?

Jan 8, 2019, 2:45 PM

The current rule ensures that the statistical analysis will push everyone to fair catch with all but the most elite of kick returners. Elite kick returners are also becoming increasingly rare as this skill set is better used elsewhere in the current Meta-game.

Excellent coaching decision! It was low risk and paid off.

i think the coaches figured

Jan 8, 2019, 2:50 PM

The chances of busting one were slim and the risk of fumbling or a block in the back was far greater than the benefit of an extra 5-10 yards. Especially with our offense
