i sell beer all the time at Clemson games

Aug 21, 2015, 4:13 PM

seems to work fine

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

I really hope this never happens in my life time

Aug 21, 2015, 4:20 PM

The only time I've seen issues with too much drinking is at bowl games. I would think everyone could go 3 and half hours without a drink, or use the pass out if you must have another drink. Is having a poor quality draft beer at a cost of 6 to 8 dollars really that important to those of you who support this idea? I understand that they project the profits to be around 1 million dollars, but is it worth the negative impact and isn't there other ways to find a million dollars?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I really hope this never happens in my life time

Aug 21, 2015, 4:29 PM

Agreed! Beer is the last thing we need to sell. There are already enough stupid drunks who are over the limit on game day in the first place. Does Clemson want the liability in the event of a death or serious injury? Hope the BOT puts a lid on this idea. What different fans do outside the Valley is hard enough to be monitored by law enforcement. Fans have plenty to watch for traffic wise as it is now.

Go Tigers!

Serving alcohol to two enemies and have them setting on the same bench together expecting a friendship to come between them is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I said no to serving alcohol inside DV years ago, and I'm firmer with my no answer now than I was way back then....

There's a good bit of evidence that consumption goes down

Aug 21, 2015, 4:47 PM [ in reply to I really hope this never happens in my life time ]

when beer and wine are sold openly and legally than when all alcohol is contraband. This has definitely been the experience at West Virginia and elsewhere. It is common sense, really. If you are smuggling it in, it is far more efficient to smuggle in small amounts of high-test. And if you are smart, you are going to be knocking it back and not sipping it.

Also, many southerners (particularly in the cooler months) are known to drink that brown liquor at their tailgate. Now, if you're going to be enjoying beer or wine once you're in the stadium, you may be less likely to be consuming Wild Turkey 101 (or even a nice 16 year old Single Malt) in the parking lot before the game. And once you are in the stadium, the amount of legal beer or wine you can consume can be tightly regulated (2 or 3 drink maximum, stop sales at end of 3rd quarter, etc.)

I believe that what DRad may be saying though is that any in-stadium sales would mean the end of "pass outs" at halftime or at any other time. It could also mean tighter restrictions on parking lot consumption after the game for liability reasons. So, while I think in-stadium beer and wine sales could mean significantly less drunkenness at games and more money for the program, I know more than a few Clemson fans who are not ready for an end to "pass outs" at halftime or a ban on drinking in the lots after the game...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Leave it Is. I d rink, myself, but drunks can not be

Aug 21, 2015, 5:00 PM

controlled. We don't need this type of behavior at Clemson. It is bad enough as it is.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you could probably find a statistic somewhere to support

Aug 21, 2015, 5:06 PM [ in reply to There's a good bit of evidence that consumption goes down ]

whatever side you are on. i personally would rather not have alcohol there. i love beer, probably a little too much....to the point of a 12 step program, true drunks are not going to go into the stadium looking to get blitzed, that has and will always be done pre game. most people can drink responsibly, not me. like i said, there surely is some statistic or equation of beer sales v/s extra police, v/s revenue, etc that will prove your point.

obviously people with alcohol problems are more than just a social issue. i will say this, however. my seats are in south upper deck, and usually once or twice a year there will be an issue (usually at a night game) where someone within my section or adjacent sections is escorted out of the stadium. maybe once a season i sit in the west end zone and about 75% of the time there is some sot of issue with alcohol. be it an obnoxious fan, a spilled beer on me, or someone being escorted out. the ratio to alcohol related issues is much higher in the WEZ...but i truly don't think that selling beer will make a ton of difference one way or the other. people who like to drink, will drink. obnoxious drunks will be obnoxious, no matter if alcohol is sold or not.

However, between bowl games, WEZ, ACC championship games, etc. i have seen FAR less alcohol issues in my normal Clemson season tickets than special events. not saying legal alcohol sales is the reason, it may be a simple coincidence, but personally selling alcohol is not worth it.

Disappointing with AD and Athletic Dept. nothing ever said about fan safety by this AD and past ADs. Getting into stadium and leaving is a dangerous adventure due to moving vehicles.

They really need to build several

Aug 21, 2015, 10:18 PM [ in reply to Re: FB Update: Radakovich discusses idea of selling Beer at Clemson games ]

I think people may actually drink less if it's sold at the games. it's my belief that alcoholics drink as much as they can before games and at halftime because they know that they'll have to go without during the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FB Update: Radakovich discusses idea of selling Beer at Clemson games

Aug 22, 2015, 1:25 AM

This is the biggest reason. Alcohol revenues aren't going to be that significant in the grand scheme of things - maybe a few hundred thousand a year. Most studies have shown that people drink less when there's alcohol available in the stadium. The biggest issue with drunks at Clemson isn't the liquor brought into the stadium; it's the huge number who chug 3/4 of a solo cup of bourbon immediately prior to entering the game.

Beer sales in DV would be a big mistake. If you dont believe it just go to an NFL game. Overserved drunks make it very difficult to take kids to a game. There is plenty to drink at the tailgate.

I wonder what the boy's mamas would think about beer sales?

Aug 21, 2015, 5:27 PM

We really ought to consider a broad view before we go into something like that. It seems to me there's a chance the environment might be contaminated which may be a decision maker for some parents.

No beer sales hasn't hurt our turnout yet and those who would make the selling of beer a factor in whether or not they attend games are certainly not that into Clemson Football.

Re: FB Update: Radakovich discusses idea of selling Beer at Clemson games

Aug 21, 2015, 8:10 PM

Dan, does Clemson University really need the money so badly that you are willing to destroy the great in-stadium experience? Do you want your grandson or grandaughter sitting next to a beer swilling drunk? Oh, I forgot, you sit in one of the air-conditionedd boxes. You need to think about the fans in the stands who make up the vast majority of fans before you radically change what is arguably one of the best game day experiences in college football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FB Update: Radakovich discusses idea of selling Beer at Clemson games

Aug 22, 2015, 12:43 AM

No beer sales...leave at halftime...best tradition in the country...don't screw it up...need more revenue? Add $5 to each parking pass and $1 to every ticket... Those two would crush any beer sales and keep the gates open to come and go as you please. Don't mess with a good thing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those of you worried about the "family atmosphere"

Aug 22, 2015, 1:39 AM

are greatly underestimating the many intoxicated people at tailgates before and after the game. Those same people are in the stadium for the game too, and 99% of them act fine.

I certainly don't want to ruin our reputation as great fans with a great stadium atmosphere, but I also don't feel that selling alcohol in the stadium will change that.

The selling of beer at Clemson games??

My Humble opinion: we are a Clemson! We are class! We are a family!

We don't need to "sell our souls" for another "revenue stream".

Keep Death Valley (inside the stadium)
Alcohol free!! It would tarnish everything good that Clemson stands for.

And we are BETTER than that!!

I agree 100%. I remember when we would get "bug juice" from the cafeteria, mix it with grain alcohol and smuggle it into the games. Over about 56 years I've mature a little bit. Let's keep the beer outside at tailgate parties.

Not all of us are high rollers parked five seconds from the stadium so the halftime leaving makes no sense for me. I am not an alcoholic either but having a cold brew or two during the game would be great. I will let security deal with the drunks just like any other game.

I'm in the beer business and drink a lot at the tailgate. I kinda like being able to go in the game to yell and sober up. Piling more alcohol with emotions never works out well. It should be a better experience than watching grown men drinking themselves into fights and sickness. Leave it in the lot. Too many children on hand.
