Get Your Ya Yas Out - my favorite Stones live album, and I listened to it hundreds of times before Sticky Fingers came out, which is my favorite Stones album. I never really listened to other studio albums before SF came out, then went and bought them all.

it's difficult to choose that ONE album per artist

because if you don't really have that one favorite, you like several albums about equally, it tends to eliminate that band entirely. I have that issue with Pink Floyd - I can't elevate that one album distinctly over the others, so I can't pick any of them.

I was thinking something similar the other day myself looking at my way-too-large LP/CD collection, my thought was more "if you had to throw away all music away but could keep only 5 albums", very similar track. Easy to do a top 25 or 30, but whittling down to just FIVE is tough.
Not quite there, but I'm pretty close.

aren't your very favorite albums in life pretty much the same ones you have loved since you were a youngsters and influenced what you mostly listen to now? Basically "changed your life" type albums? Mine are.
