what would you consider as a "successful" Biden term?
What do you want to see happen in the next 4 years to consider Biden as a successful president?

I would like him to be a caretaker type president who does very little but keep the white house warm. To that end, I hope:
1) not die or leave office 2) no supreme court vacancies (but he'll probably get to replace Breyer). 3) no wars 4) minimize executive orders

Alex,
That is a pretty low bar. I think you will get most of that.
I would add
1. A more fair tax structure that might help rebuild the middle class in the long run.
2. Some improvement in conditions for the working class - wages, healthcare, education, etc.
3. A reduction in tribalism within the USA - racial, gender, ideology, etc.
I am not looking for liberal miracles here - the nation is deeply divided, though not nearly as much as social media extremists would have us believe. I am just hopeful that Biden can undo much of the damage done by Trump and get us moving in the right direction. That would be a great first term.

The most immediate issue will be Covid and economic recovery. Push out a vaccine, send out stimmy checks, maybe cancel some college debt.
I'm going to guess that if he has a signature piece of legislation it'll be healthcare, but that may have to wait two years. I'm guessing he'll waste a lot of political capital with everything above.
In a more general sense, just a return to normalcy: repair our relationships with our NATO allies, no more alternative facts, no more retweeting white supremacists or conspiracy theories, etc. etc.

or starts cancelling college debt or giving free tuition, I will be switching back to voting Republican in the next election.
Probably will anyways if the next Dem candidate is more progressive, but definitely if Biden starts giving in to the progressive ideals.
I agree with all the “normalcy” stuff though. Just sit in a corner for 4 years and don’t do anything major and it will be a significant improvement on the last 4 years.

cac,
Since you mentioned student debt, I was wondering - what would be wrong with matching funds on a decreasing scale. For instance, for every dollar that one pays back in the first year of the program, the federal government will cover a dollar. Year 2 - 90% Year 3 - 80 % and so forth ?
That way the students have some skin in the game, they are motivated to pay back sooner rather than later, and they can crawl out from under the crippling debt while they are relatively young. That seems like a reasonable compromise to me.

Why do we need to compromise at all?

Why do we need to forgive any student loans? Why not mortgages? Or car loans?
These people took out loans knowing they had to pay them back. Why should they get a free pass to ignore their obligation?

Waaahhhh. Why should other people get stuff but not me? Student debt is a huge issue that needs to be addressed and the covid recovery is a great opportunity. For many kids, we've essentially said if you want a decent job you have to get a four year degree, minimum, which means you're going to be so burdened with debt you can forget about home ownership or financial security your first x years out of college.

9,
This was an interesting article.
Here is part of the problem. About 25 or so years ago, state governments drastically reduced their support for state universities. These mostly Republican legislatures said that they thought that colleges should be run like businesses and compete.
So they did. Clemson built themselves up and competed for customers - all over the world. Wealthier students came and paid higher and higher tuition - remember when in-state students could afford to go to Clemson.
So a big part of the exploding costs of college is built on the withdrawal of state governments from their responsibility to higher education.

I'd be for that. There are other things like making federal loans interest free for x years that'd help. It's important to note that in the context of my previous post, I'm linking student loans to economic recovery as part of a stimulus package.

And do absolutely nothing.
As a business owner who already did a round of layoffs, Biden's economic policies scare the crap out of me.
Trump didn't do anything for the deficit and Biden is wanting to accelerate it. Plus, his retirement agenda can really fawk over the markets.
