For the longest time, I thought it was illegal to sell/ship/receive any laser more powerful than 5mW in the US. Foreign companies couldn't even ship them to US addresses. I recently started seeing ads pop up on buddybook and the like for far more powerful lasers. I'm like "how?" Some quick research shows that any power laser (I'm sure there are SOME limits somewhere) are legal in the US, you just can't label it a "laser pointer" if it's > 5mW. Weird. Dunno if that's always been the case or if that's a recent change.
Anyway, ordered a 3W laser from some shady Chinese distributor for something like $22. After I ordered it, I started thinking that this may actually be a bad idea, and was halfway hoping I got scammed. I got the shipping notice yesterday--still in China, so it'll be a minute before it shows up. You can burn paper, wood, and other stuff with 3W of power, and it WILL blind you should it encounter your retina. There appears to be some possible practical applications, as well. For example:

If you could do this from 50' away so the wasp(s) has no idea where the enemy is, this seems way more fun than spraying Raid from 15'.

That is actually one of the worst things to do with carpenter bees... trap them inside, still alive.

for Electric Boat almost 20 years ago. We were doing beam shots on alignment (Nd YAG 100W laser) and some contractor working on the machine slides into the non-safe zone, we tell him there's a live laser, keeps working....so my brother yeslls "HEY< IT CAN BURN YOUR EYE OUT!"
Dude, shrugged his shoulders and kept working. Later as the ambulance was taking him away, he was crying about being blind for the rest of his life, we just laughed and headed to get a beer.
JK - we shut the laser off, no one was hurt
