Can anyone explain leaving early to not get drafted?

Apr 29, 2017, 10:14 PM

Seems like Scott and even to some extent Gallman would have stayed. I know RBs get beat up and need To get to the league early but the chances of sticking as an undrafted free agent are slim. Why leave early for that? Seems like a Derrick Hamilton replay.

Both graduated, both hold clemson records, both brought home the national championship trophy, and the lowest paid player in the NFL makes twice what the average anesthesiologist does after 4 more years of school & 4 years of residency... so probably some mix of the above.

He never expected to get drafted. Was confident he can make it as an undrafted free agent.

1) Talent at WR behind him pushing for more playing time
2) Uncertainty with new QB
3) Measurables don't improve and that is why he wasnt drafted,. Won't get taller and won't get faster.

really. I thought he would have with good hands, tough running, and as a good play maker as he is. That said I think he will still make it

scott was not going to get any taller or faster and he probably peaked his sophomore year. Gallman went a lot higher than most of would have guessed this time last year. Both have their degrees BTW.

Did you copy and paste the post above

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Scott lost speed due to knee injury.

Apr 29, 2017, 10:24 PM

He was definitely a 4.5 guy coming out of high school. No way to regain that sometimes.

When you have acheived greatness and you have a degree. its time to pursue the next challenge. Not everything is about the money

Darn shame he doesn't fit somewhere. I think he'd be a true asset to some team. Even on the scout team or whatever they have in the nfl.

I think Wayne played in 42 games. Would not consider that leaving early.

How many snaps are there to go around? That said, I like Chargers destination. Good luck Artavis!

I don't think Scott would be drafted next year either.

Apr 29, 2017, 11:01 PM

He's going to get paid to play football now instead of playing another year for free when he already holds a degree.

Re: Can anyone explain leaving early to not get drafted?

Plain and simple. Scott was the jet sweep/bubble screen get the ball to him with space a blockers guy. Ray Ray is going to be our guy for that next year. He is just faster and shiftier. He was looking at the same grade this year as next year, and as someone has already pointed out he has degree in hand along with a ring. He has nothing else to prove here. Good luck Artavis I wish him the best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he rolled the dice to see if he could stick with a team

Apr 30, 2017, 9:41 AM

or he got bad advice. I don't think most people understand how hard it is to make an NFL roster. For you to make the team you're essentially kicking another top level football player out of the league from last year....and you're competing with hundreds of other guys to knock that guy out of the league as well. It will be a major accomplishment for him to make a roster and that's not a knock on him...it's that tough to do.

Like another said, Scott reached his potential and won't

Apr 30, 2017, 10:08 AM

Have the chemistry he had with Deshaun with our next qb even if he is great. His measurables don't change. Only thing that changes is number receptions yards etc. also I'm not sure but looking at WRs coming out next year vs this year I'm not sure he's any better off. If anything he had a little extra notice from being a national champion this year. For rbs their lifespan is short and for that reason alone it makes since for him to go and he wasn't going to move up in rounds I don't think he got a decent pick imo

Re: Can anyone explain leaving early to not get drafted?

Apr 30, 2017, 10:12 AM

3 year starter/heavy snap counts. What does another year with a new QB gain him. To be fair when we say "X should stay another year" we are generally talk about guys who have shown a little of what they can bring or are one year of great production into their careers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see why Scott would return.

Apr 30, 2017, 10:26 AM

He won't have a better QB throwing him the ball and he won't be getting taller or probably faster. Might as well get started on his NFL playing career.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All of the above and graduation.***

Re: Can anyone explain leaving early to not get drafted?

Apr 30, 2017, 11:14 AM

Not sure what other explanations you got, but here's how I see that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Some guys are going max out at what they bring to the table by their Jr year
for various reasons. Maybe they're to small, too slow or what ever.....
And coming back for another year isn't going change a whole lot from an
athletic point of view.
Sure, you don't get drafted! But using that 1st year in the NFL to work
towards making a squad and possily earning a contract quickly gets that year
behind you. You can't show the coaches what you can do for "THEIR" team by
playing another year of college that MAY or MAY NOT make you better. Plus,
if there is doubt it's going matter. With things like injuries, there's only
one way to go.....DOWN.
Just saying...
And for a guy like, Scott for ex.....it was probably best.
