It was split that year. GT was national champion in the Coach's Poll. Colorado was national champion in the AP poll.

I was curious myself and yeah GT never hit #1 in the AP during the regular season...
There wasn't an AP poll in 1917 and 1928. The 1952 poll was based on end of regular season before the bowls (Ga Tech won their Sugar Bowl to finish 12-0. #1 Michigan State finished 9-0 and did not go to a bowl). Then of course Colorado took the AP poll in 1990 while GT got UPI that year.

what surprises me is that only 25 teams have never reached #1, I would gave guessed the number would be higher.

If I'm not mistaken, WVU came within one game (Pitt) of playing for the National Championship when Rich Rod coached them. Pitt won that game, and RR went to Michigan afterwards.
