critical game planning decision nobody is talking about

Jan 8, 2019, 10:46 AM

Was playing williams almost entire game at TE. Having the extra "blocking" TE and little to no receiving threat was critical because an extra blocker was much more important given our talent at WR and RB we had plenty to distribute the ball to already without a TE touching the ball.

I think this decision is a much bigger factor in how we produced than anyone has mentioned.

I hadn’t really thought about it but completely agree.***

Great observation. Details people don’t notice that add up to big plays.

I was wondering about that this morning, didn't remember any

TE passes, or many even running routes. Good catch

He was in on a few routes early in the game and then I think we realized that their DBs could not cover Ross or Higgins. This meant there was not reason to send more guys out on routes and allowed us to keep him in.

I think we had a play for him that we didn't need...

Luring them to sleep by running no routes, but without them stopping Ross/Higgens we just kept with it.

I'm sure that we would have hit a critical 3rd down to the TE had they figured a way to stop us on the border... guess we have to save that play for next year. (or 2022 when Trevor and Ross leave)

He has blocked great this year.

Correct! Great observation. Another was not attempting returns on kickoffs. Take the field position with our offense and push the envelope. It was obvious our staff and team began planning for Bama well before Notre Dame.

Saban met his match in Coach Venables last night.

Very good point!

Yep. Trevor looked like a baby in the cradle last night.

If he hadn't taken a couple slides on runs, his jersey would have been spotless. Fantastic plan by our staff.
