We replaced gifts* 5 or 6 years ago and instead rent a cabin in the mountains and spend quality time as a family.
*We may purchase movies, games, etc. to use in the cabin over Christmas and wrap them just for fun. We also may buy a few trivial items and wrap them just to go through the motions of opening gifts. But we quit spending money in that way overall because it was wasteful. If we need or want stuff thoughout the year, we just buy it.
