a new old kweshin for the bored

Feb 7, 2017, 4:02 PM

I asked this question a few weeks ago but I still don't think we have a correct answer.

http://www.tigernet.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=20879430

At the end of the third quarter of the super bowl, Atlanta was getting ready to punt. They took a delay of game penalty with a few seconds left in the quarter. After the 5 yard penalty, the clock started running again and ran out the rest of the 3rd quarter before the punt.

This goes back to my original question. If Atlanta is getting ready to punt at any point in the 4th quarter, could they theoretically keep taking delay of game penalties until either the Pats took a TO to stop the clock or the game clock ran out? Eventually the penalty would lead to a half the distance to the goal instead of a 5 yard penalty, but if the clock always restarts after the penalty, why not just run the clock out to win the game?

Found this....
Today, a team can only take two consecutive delay of game penalties on a down. Third time triggers an unsportsmanlike consult penalty, which stops the game clock.

I found this doing some research. I'm pretty sure I'm right

You're welcome.
