What's up with the PC language police crowd?

Oct 27, 2015, 12:32 PM

Guess what, when I go to a Clemson football game I am highly emotional. I may or may not be buzzed. I care deeply about the team.

So I might say some stupid or illogical things. I will curse. Big ####### deal.

If you really need to shelter your kids that much, don't take them to a football game and hide them from the real world.

Not to mention, language policing is just ridiculous. If I drop an F bomb at a football game it hurts nobody. It is an expression of my emotions.

To each their own

Oct 27, 2015, 12:38 PM

But I remember a day (and I'm not that old) when it was considered rude to use foul language around women and children.

Like I said, to each their own, and I'm not throwing rocks at you for it, but I can see why some folks would rather not have drunken folks screaming obscenities around their children.

To each their own if...

Oct 27, 2015, 10:01 PM

it is truly their own. I'm sure this guy is a Clemson fan, and I understand having emotion. I, myself, cuss way too much. But, that is only around people (mostly Army) that I am positive are ok with it. I ABSOLUTELY wouldn't cuss around children, old people, or women I don't know. I am able to filter myself, and that says a lot.

So, yes, to each his own. But, not in public when people can't filter out their surroundings. These people paid for seats, and should retain the right to not have to listen to vulgar language. And, it's not fair to deprive their children of a wholesome good time just because someone is too selfish to filter their language.

Re: To each their own if...

Oct 27, 2015, 10:28 PM

I'm always so embarrassed when I go to a restaurant with a group of Army guys and one of them cusses or talks about inappropriate things. I hate to be the guy to have to tell them to watch their language and be aware of their surroundings. But, it seems like (even though they seem uneasy, and embarrassed) nobody else ever says anything.

Re: To each their own

Oct 28, 2015, 9:46 AM [ in reply to To each their own ]

It's not only rude, it's being very disrepectful to another mans family. I know how to act and carry my self in public, and I have always done so with total respect of everyone around me and within hearing distance of me. Respecting others don't cost nothing, but if someone is using vulgar abusive language in front of my family, that isn't free and it can be costly.

The kids would only be missing the game because you are an overly protective parent who likes to shelter your child.

Look, don't misunderstand me. I am not going to be talking casually with heavy cursing but I will certainly use those words in emotional situations. If we punt on 4th and 1 on the 40 I will probably curse. If we score or have a big play I might let out a F yeah. I might call one of the opposing players a P#### if he gets blown up by a Gallman stiff-arm, etc.

Oct 27, 2015, 5:36 PM [ in reply to Re: What's up with the PC language police crowd? ]

Its not sheltering kids, it is not wanting them around foul language. I am no Saint by any stretch, and in my career I have both used and been exposed to all manner of foul language. I also frankly have been around plenty of parents who will openly use the F Bomb in front of their children. I do not for a second think it is due to any choice to make them more exposed to the world, or whatever, its that they don't know better. I am all for getting hyped, and absolutely feel as passionate as anyone when Clemson plays football. I have cheered, roared, or screamed in agony at a busted play. Might even sulk for a week or so after a loss. But I don't curse around my wife, people children, or even generally outside my work. Doing it at work hardly excuses it, but nothing quite gets the attention of a young Marine so much as "### did you think you were doing" So it does get said. Not kicking rocks at you, but I will hope in time you reconsider your stance in this matter.

Look some people think educating your kids involves exposing them to different experiences/people/knowledge/ideas. Others think educating their kids is forcing them to live and act in the way that the parent wants. I tend to prefer the former and I think it worked out very well for me.

The PC crowd made it possible for you to enjoy Tiger football long before you knew what made the experience so unique in the first place. I teach college students and while there a few who act they are above the rules of polite, indeed decent behavior, I would suggest you learn some respect for those with children, as well as those who earned it simply by being more mature and a whole lot less self absorbed! There is such a thing as recognizing and respecting those who have earned their place by being considerable of others. Why open your cursing mouth and be seen as rude as opposed to keeping your language and attitude to a civil tone and thus be seen as having brought up with some common sense!

Go Tigers!

If you want to shelter your children from the real world, go to church.

There is no reason I should have to filter my behavior (outside of illegal activity) to comply with your personal decision on how to raise your kids.

I personally am against filtering language/thought/expression and believe this country would be a much better place if weren't quieted by this constant notion of political correctness.

I'm passionate about Clemson football too. You got flak for saying it was one of the top 3 most important things in your life right now, but I would totally echo that statement. I'm right there with you.

I have been to every home game this year. You better believe I was swearing throughout the ND game, especially in the 4th quarter. But I was by far the youngest person in my area, and I'm only 25.

At the GT game, I also swore loudly during a busted play. Well, the mother sitting in front of me turned around and politely asked that I not cuss in front of her 4 year old. I obliged and it didn't hurt me one bit.

What was I supposed to do, tell her to go #### herself?

Context with words is crucial. I am not telling you or your kids/wife/etc. to F themselves. I am using these words abstractly or as adjectives/adverbs to describe the football game. I am offending nobody except those who are offended by free expression.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Decorum

So, you are ok with teaching a 6 year old to say the F-word when things don't go his way. As long as he uses it abstractly or as an adjective/adverb? And only allowed if he is expressing his emotions? You may be 25 and graduated with honors, but because you are read and write does not mean your maturity level is not on a 7th grade level.

When you are offended I will tell you that slapping you in the face is not "wrong" but a free expression in my reality and you must accept it. Same thing. Harsh language is inappropriate in certain situations. In front of children is one of them.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with sheltering children from certain situations. I taught mine not to touch the hot stove too because it hurts. I didn't wait for them to do it and then say yes you just used your freedom to discover pain in life. Drop an F bomb in from of the right person (or wrong as the case may be) can be just as painful.

If you're a student (because as I understand it, that's who is doing this), what you're saying right now to us on this message board is that you're a self-entitled child that, at 18+ years old and a student at one of the finest public universities in the country, is incapable of controlling his emotions so much so that, even though people have told you that they find it rude and embarrassing and that they don't want their children to hear it...and even though it adds zero to the spirit of that cheer...you still feel like you are right to scream obscenities in a public place?

Is that about right?

At the very least, yelling obscenities in that situation is a clear indication of the level of respect you have for those around you...which is to say, very little. Disappointing. I don't want Clemson to have to teach their students how to be adults. It's just sad to see that they don't seem to be figuring it out on their own.

I have never been confronted about this issue because I have mostly watched games in the student section (where people understand that words such as these are meaningless and hurt nobody).

But to answer your first question, yes when watching a Clemson game it is hard for me to handle my emotions. There are few things in life that I put as much emotion into as watching my alma mater play football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If in your opinion (and the opinion of your fellow

enlightened students, according to you) the word is meaningless, but to thousands of people around you it is considered rude, crass and inappropriate, why are you so weak-minded that you cannot stop yourself from saying it? You just said that the evolved students know the word means nothing. It's not intimidating to the opponents...you said you consider it harmless. Yet, like a child, you can't control yourself?

I'm not sure you realize how ridiculous you sound, both now and probably on Saturdays. You sound like a self-entitled child. I certainly can't stop you if I wanted, and I guess I'm fortunate in that I sit on the other side of the stadium. But don't doubt that you're representing you, the Clemson students and the Clemson family poorly. You're choosing to do so.

How many times has someone pulled up the picture of all the South Carolina fans flipping the bird at Clemson players after scoring a touch down so that we can mock their lack of class? How often do we go on and on about Maryland thug fans throwing out the F-bomb? There's something to being "better than that." But it takes...are you ready?...a very slight level of self-control.

Restricting speech is a liberal idea. Thought and expression policing is liberal.

When I was at Clemson, the cadence count cheer...

Oct 27, 2015, 4:46 PM

included the phrase "fight #### it fight". I don't remember anyone especially concerned about hurting our culture, our reputation, or God forbid what it would do to the children. Of course back then there wasn't an internet to discuss ... uh, I mean rant about these things so I guess no one knew if anyone was offended or even cared. It was just the way it was when I was at Clemson. We were just kids passionate about our team and that was the way we said the cheer. I said #### loud and proud as part of that cheer, but I tended not to use the world #### in general conversation. That's because my mom taught me better, but believe me, I didn't learn that word from a cheer. It wasn't just the students. Everyone in the stands said the cheer the same way. Now fast forward 34 years and no one says #### in the cadence count anymore. I guess we live in a different world where we have to grow up faster, are expected not to use language that might offend anyone in earshot, and above all else make sure no one around you perceives you as being different than them. Don't rush the field, act like you have been there before, don't say this, don't say that, etc, etc. We all hear these things preached to us. There is something to be said for just allowing 18- 24 year old kids to just be kids and enjoy themselves on a few Saturdays in the fall each year. Afterall, we can probably all agree that being a student at Clemson will probably be some of the best years of their lives. Most will spend the rest of their lives in a cubicle. I kind of expect to hear bad language when I am in a crowd of 18 to 24 year olds who have had a few drinks in them. Perhaps it is the word f*ck some find more offensive than say sh*t or ####? I don't know of any lives that have been ruined by using the word f*ck. Believe me, everytime I hear the whohoo I want to scream f*ck too so maybe it is a form of protest? How dare my school fight song get hijacked that way! (sarcasm) I am not running around the internet trying to suppress the whohoo. I just refuse to participate in it. My first response is not be to try to control those saying it, but figure out what I could change to either avoid or limit my exposure; or learn to live with it. Unfortunately it seems the latter is the world I have to live in with the whohoo. If I was concerned about my children repeating the whohoo, then I would certainly spend time with them so they know it is not acceptable under any circumstance. Perhaps seating somewhere not so close to the students would be the best solution as I have been to three games this year and have yet to hear fu*k except in my own mind after the whohoo. Just my two cents so whohoo away as it is not your responsibility to control everyone else.

I guess I am hearing two different things here

Oct 27, 2015, 5:37 PM [ in reply to There is so much wrong with your post... ]

Nevertheless, both are curse words and many are going off on the use of curse words. I just thought it was important to note using curse words in cheers is nothing new and it didn't seem to be a problem in the past. If people are being honest though, as you are now pointing out, it's not the fact that they cussed. The issue is the cuss word used. As you so eloquently point out, F*ck is worse than D*mn in your opinion. I guess it is true that one if more socially acceptable than the other. Evidently you have no sense of humor as I was using the futility of protesting against the whohoo to illustrate the fact that you cannot control other people use of language. I think most people, who were raised right, do not yell f*ck in public, but when you are in a crowd of your peers, perhaps have had a few drinks, and people around you are yelling f*ck things happen. I am not condoning it I am just saying whining about it on the internet most likely will not accomplish anything but make you feel better about yourself, but doesn't do anything to create a solution. Do I think Clemson students who participated are bad people? No I don't. Do I condone it? No. Do I truthfully think anyone has been harmed? No. Do I think I have it within my power to change things by ranting on a fan forum? No.

There may be a pretty easy way to get a gut check for feedback on your behavior and language - just ask your mother what her opinion is. If she says it's fine and she would encourage you to use the same language around her grandchildren (if she has any), that may be a starting point for a root cause analysis of the problem.

Re: What's up with the PC language police crowd?

Oct 27, 2015, 1:54 PM

PC language police have no place in our country, and "being PC" is destructive to society.

That being said, swearing in the stands in Death Valley is never cool. I get being all riled up and emotional about Clemson Football too sometimes. I even swear at my TV, but never in the stands. Let's leave swearing in the stands to South Carolina fans. Learn to control your emotions.

Personally, if you were dropping F'Bombs around my kids and refused to stop I'd either A) have security to escort you out of the stadium B) beat you up

Be smart, either way you're not going to make it through the game swearing.

And your argument about the absurdity of language policing sits on a very slippery slope. Watch how I extend your logic to include public sex..

"Not to mention, policing acts of public intercourse is just ridiculous. If my wife and I get a bit buzzed before football game and decide to do the dirty on Bowman Field it hurts nobody. It is an expression of our emotions."

See what I did there? Point being, there's a line somewhere and most would agree that every time you drop an F-bomb within hearing distance of my little one you've crossed it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You're confusing political correctness with common decency

Oct 27, 2015, 9:37 PM

Hmmmmmm it's almost as if there is a difference between sexual behavior and language!

Think about it this way. How would you feel if a guy in front of you is yelling the F word? How about if a gay couple in front of you at the game is kissing? How about if a gay couple is having sex in front of you?

Note: whether they are gay or hetero doesn't matter but I notice a strong protestant church ethos from a lot of you. So it probably matters to you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You're confusing political correctness with common decency

Oct 27, 2015, 9:50 PM

Where did sexual preference become part of common decency in how you act in public, around families and children. I would assume any moral person regardless of what their sexual preference would not have sex in the stadium in front of 85,000. In your progressive attitude you can't stay on topic of bad behavior without jumping to another, different situation, to take the heat off of your cavalier attitude toward society as a whole.

Oct 27, 2015, 9:50 PM [ in reply to Re: You're confusing political correctness with common decency ]

Two guys kissing at a game in front of me and my family? Totally cool with that, provided it doesn't cross into the realm of the obscene. Same standard I'd set for a heterosexual couple. I'll even offer to conduct a ceremony for them if they ever want to charter my boat. That's just me speaking, though. I appreciate not everyone on this board agrees.

The other two examples you offer... that's on the far side of the aforementioned line of societal norms. And judging from the responses this post has gotten, I'd say I'm in the majority on that one.

This has nothing to do with a Protestant ethic. This has everything to do with a standard of behavior that you're willing to toss aside to satiate some Rand-ian libertarian fantasy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Since you asked...

Oct 27, 2015, 9:55 PM

You might be the majority on this board, that's true. Nationally? Not at all. Go into a board room or professional meeting in NYC, you might hear some language you don't like. Same with Chicago/LA/Houston/etc. Foul language is casually used both at work, in personal situations, among friends, and in many public situations. Is it always appropriate? No probably not. Is a football game one of these sanctioned safe spaces? Absolutely not.

"Foul language is casually used both at work, in personal situations, among friends, and in many public situations."

compare you list to my list: Schools, playgrounds, theaters, and Clemson football games.

Guess what the major difference in these two lists is....

Thats right, your list of where its more appropriate to use foul language describes places that have few if any children. In my list you will find more children and I would hope you would agree that it is not appropriate to use the same language.

*reading through this thread it seems like you are arguing for a spontaneous reaction while others are arguing the cadence F-ing count. If you are still arguing for a spontainious outbreak of "emotion" I would hope you would have the decency to curtail your language if asked by anyone within earshot of your said outbreak of emotion. On the other hand, if you are arguing for the "right", or whatever you want your point to be, to scream in unison the F word at a Clemson game, you are a complete loser with an agenda and I hope you save this so you can look back and see what a moron you were.

Oct 27, 2015, 10:20 PM [ in reply to Re: Since you asked... ]

I can't deny that you're right in one respect: foul language is pretty common in the situations you mentioned. Probably more so than it should be. It never ceases to amaze me what so-called professionals will do and say behind closed doors.

BUT I disagree with your assessment that a football game - especially a CLEMSON football game - is an appropriate place for that kind of behavior. Look around you the next time you're in the stands and take note of just how many children are within shouting distance. Those brains are little sponges. How many of our dedicated fans are old enough to be your grandparents? Would you be willing to use that language in front of your grandmother? It's called the Clemson family for a reason.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly.

words to be offended by. Kids would be much better off not being taught to arbitrarily moralize certain sounds. With that said... you are NEVER going to convince anyone of that. Something THAT ingrained in a society doesn't change for a LONG time. So... if you say all those things and some former Marine dad tells you to shut up then you are going to have to deal with the consequences.

Screaming a word that makes people very uncomfortable is just like shoving someone. There is no moral difference between a verbal assault and a physical assault. As long as you can handle the repercussions and don't cry if someone comes after you, then I support your attitude. But I also support a right of a parent to protect their kids from perceived threats. Even if misguided, I can't blame a parent for coming after you.

I cuss like a sailor, but I have respect for others who probably don't want to hear it. Being considerate for those who are different than you, I think, is a healthy policy.

It's ironic that you call this "PC language police" since "PC" is a term that people typically use negatively to pooh-pooh changes in the (un)acceptability of contemporary language. In contrast, 50 years ago if you uttered so much as a single curse word in front of a woman or child, every gentleman around you would stop what they were doing to call you to the carpet. So in a way, the objection to cursing in front of children is about as un-PC as you can get.

Hilarious hypocrisy from you losers.

"Learn to be a MAN and a GENTLEMAN. If you cuss around me I will commit acts of premeditated assault! Real men commit crime! Because my wife is a fragile flower with sensitive ears! I'm not sexist at all."

Good stuff guys

Re: What's up with the PC language police crowd?

All I want you to do is make a sign at the next home game that says " I am the PC language guy on TigerNet and I can say whatever I want around your kids," because I just want to see if you have the balls to back up your mouth! I have 2 kids who love Clemson as much as anyone and i dont want them hearing that every 5 mins, I understand being a college student and having a good time, when you are at your tailgate cuss all you want but can't you just respect other people who don't want to hear it during the game, just for a few hours?

35% percent of people were raised wrong. It is fascinating. I would have thought maybe 10% max would have found the original post acceptable. That's disheartening.

been better off to have written you post down on a piece of paper then thought about it for 24 hours before wisely deciding not to post it on TNet.

Families should be able to go to Clemson games with out having to worry about fans like you.

You are one of those fans I call "Stay at home and watch game on TV fan" Then you can curse and drink as much as you want.

I truly just want this to die off. Let classless people be

Oct 29, 2015, 3:36 PM

Classless and let prudes be prudes. I'm tired of seeing constant b!tching about each other on here I promise y are both hated equally. Just don't go near each other, how hard is this? A handful of drunk students are going to curse so if you have a problem with that just don't go over to the d@mn student section. It's one small area of the stadium at certain games you can't go near if you don't want to hear foul language not the whole stadium. Yes most of us hate the chant, no there's nothing we can do about it, no it isn't a recent thing it's been going on for years, no you're not special for disliking that chant your just a normal person with public decency. Let this ##### die already you're all just making it worse and drawing attention.
