To help wade through all the mess I found on Amazon.

Apr 30, 2019, 9:32 AM

I am looking for some apparatus where I can monitor the temperature in different areas of my house. Just putting some thermometers in the rooms will not really help me achieve my goal as I can't check them every hour.

I want something that will either record the data all day long or send me updates through out the day. This information is vital to determining where I'll ferment my next batch o beer.

properly lager. On National Championship Eve, we brewed a beer with yeast that would die off at like 72 degrees. Set the heat to kick on at 62 and AC to kick on at 67. Luckily we had mostly low temps for a while. Worked out well. RH and Shorty and I don't know who all else had some of that beer.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was a freaking GOOD beer.

Apr 30, 2019, 10:14 AM

I'd buy that beer in a store.

You can easily keep a 5 gallon batch in the 50's

Apr 30, 2019, 2:21 PM [ in reply to Just wait until I get to the point of buying equipment to ]

by getting a plastic tote and surrounding the carboy/bucket with water and adding ice periodically. I just did it for a pilsner. You won't be able to properly lager it in the secondary though as this method is not viable for temps below 50.

Actually, I think TXTF's online business started out with a few 13" Galileo thermometers and a few webcams.

This may work. It’s a lab thermometer.

Search USB temperature data logger on ebay.

Many available in the US for $13.

You do have to plug some of these into a laptop to read the data.

Your best friends when it comes to fermentation:

Apr 30, 2019, 2:13 PM

An inexpensive, used fridge:
https://greenville.craigslist.org/app/d/greer-good-working-refrigerator/6878113038.html

A thermostat.
There are cheaper versions of this, but I own this one, and it works amazingly well:
https://www.amazon.com/Johnson-Controls-A421ABG-02C-Electronic-Temperature/dp/B01IWIZJHA/ref=dp_ob_title_kitchen

and, of course:
https://www.amazon.com/Star-San/dp/B01467UGN8/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=starsan&qid=1556647509&s=gateway&sr=8-1&th=1

If you are serious about brewing, the only way you will get consistent results is if you create a fermentation chamber. It will exponentially improve your product. Keeping the yeast at a consistent temperature will take a brewer's work from good to great.

A kegorator is in the plans down the line.

Apr 30, 2019, 3:08 PM [ in reply to Your best friends when it comes to fermentation: ]

Simply no room for a second full fridge in the house. If my plan to finish out the shed ever happens, that would be the place for a second fridge.
