Could be the best thing for ending conference championship games and sourcing a logical (I used that word?) and sensible (what's in my coffee!?!) expansion of the CFP. The bowl system is worthless, but an additional 4 (?) games could help...wouldn't lengthen the season...could allow 2 weeks between rounds, if necessary...and raise the standards of the remaining bowls. Lastly, the bowls are spread out regionally enough that travel, especially the first round games, shouldn't be too prohibitive...depending upon the seeds, naturally.
Just random, illogical and senseless opining on a wet Thursday morning....

I also think ‘bureaucratic’ leaders and decision makers are so risk (and criticism) adverse, that the current 4 team format will survive (painfully, for some of us and endure?) until the current contract with espn for the CFP expires in 2025.

I like the 4 team playoff as it is. Makes the regular season games very important just to get to the playoffs. I would change it to only conf champions if # of losses are the same to prevent a situation where Bama gets in and gets the advantage of a bye week. If you’re power 5 conf team or Notre Dame with less losses than a Conf Champion, then you can get in over a weak conf Champion

And moving to 8 teams won't lessen the importance of the regular season. If anything, it might actually elevate the importance of strengthening schedules. What's the point of a CCG being a replay...that's nothing but double jeopardy...Auburn would affirm that, while Bama applauded.
Reality is, too many teams are playing meaningless regular season games...in front of far less than full stadiums. What's the point?
Now, if the ultimate objective is to have only a few dozen 'Power Teams', the current format will deliver that...leaving a lot of schools to question how long they continue with the charade of 'intercollegiate athletics'.
