That d@mn howitzer that they shoot at Missouri is pretty freaking cool! It is amazing the sound that comes from ours, considering it is a 8 guage load. Just imagine a 75mm blank....you would feel that on top of hearing it. Plus, it would give the ROTC another reason to be involved.

As one who attended Army games in the mid 1990s that Howitzer gets old, real fast, when you're in the stands.

on an 8" howitzer. I was too smart to be on the guns (FDC) but I got to pull the lanyard on a few. I literally got a little funny in my tummy from that. Yeah, stand down soldier lol.

I don't think it's an 8 gauge. Pretty sure it's a 12. I have one of the shells from the cannon from when I was younger. This has probably been 20 years ago but I don't think it has changed. I will go see if I can find the shell and look.

Correction...ours is a 10 Gauge load..Winchester Cannon....

The biggest gun I have seen shoot personally is an 8" gun......long, long barrel, unlike a howitzer. You could see the projectile coming out and follow it for a pretty good distance. For a couple of months I had a 155 howitzer battery directly adjacent to my tiny compound (in Tam Ky between Danang and Chu Lai) and when they would turn the barrels pointing over my compound it would literally shake everything off the shelves of my hootch! I loved the artillery....especially when you needed it!!!!

Amen, I had the same experience in Nam. Had to tie everything down that was on a shelf.

getting ready too fire. The first shot you didn't know where it was incoming our outgoing. The one thing I did like about having them beside my compound is that they always kept several flechette rounds right next to the guns. Think about charging a a compound with a 155 howitzer aiming right at you shooting hundreds of flechettes....scary!

A bit of trivia: Clemson TE John McMakin was accidentally

|
|
shot in the leg at close range by the blast and the wadding from the cannon when he scored a TD while diving for the pylon in a game back in 1969.
McMakin got a pretty nasty burn on his calf, but stayed in the game.
The cheerleader was probably pretty embarrassed.

LOVED the 75mm when I watched Mizzou last night. Way cooler then our toy. I know ours is part of our tradition, but if I ever win the Powerball I'm buying our Army ROTC one like Mizzou's and the University will have to refuse it, AFAIC.
