You can't put it all on Tajh...There's a difference between

Oct 22, 2013, 11:17 AM

our offense and the truly elite spread offenses this year.

Oregon: 332 Rushing Yards Per Game (7.1 YPC)
Baylor: 300 Rushing Yards Per Game (6.2 YPC)
Auburn: 300 Rushing Yards Per Game (6.3 YPC)
Ohio State: 279 Rushing Yards Per Game (6.0 YPC)
Missouri: 234 Rushing Yards Per Game (5.7 YPC)
FSU: 210 Rushing Yards Per Game (5.5 YPC)

Clemson: 165 Rushing Yards Per Game (3.9 YPC)

Our offensive struggles start with the lack of a running game...and it's not just a matter of needing to call more run plays. The yards per carry is just not there this year. Both the running backs and OL need to pick up their game.

Yep.

When you can run the ball - or at least make an EFFORT to establish the running game as a threat and show a commitment in that area - it opens everything else up. A defense will always look to defend run first ---- IF IT'S SOMEWHAT OF A LEGITIMATE CONCERN. If it's not - well, see FSU game Saturday night and the 2nd half of the SC game last year.

People say it all the time - and it's cliche - but it couldn't be more true.

Nothing neutralizes a good defense like balance.

I blame Chad Morris for the lack of running the football, he is very quick to call nothing but pass plays once another team gets a lead on us. Needs to call his friend at Auburn, they kept running the ball even when they were down and came back and won.

No, you can't, but you can......

Oct 22, 2013, 11:30 AM

objectively see that he doesn't handle pressure well in tough situations a lot of the time.

As the QB, he's got to lead/inspire the offense and keep them focused on what's going on. If he loses his concentration it spreads to others.

I'm not criticizing him because I can't even imagine being on the field against FSU the other night, much less calmly and cooly keeping my focus.

That's why QBs who can do that are far and few between.

Need some creativity in our run game...

Oct 22, 2013, 11:31 AM

We don't have the backs or OL to consistently run between the tackles. And Tajh takes a huge pounding when they line up in the "pistol" and run the read-option. IMO, we need to use some misdirection (not trick gimmick plays) and attack the edges of the defense more than we have been.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes! I completely agree.

Oct 22, 2013, 11:39 AM

Running up the middle every time, from the shotgun, with Tajh or a small running back, with mostly poor blocking, isn't working. We rarely seem to mix it up with runs to the outside. If our line can't block, hopefully our receivers can. They should understand that if they block well, and force teams to respect our (successful) running game, it will open up lanes for them to catch the ball in space later.

Run game suffers b/c Rod isn't an every down back

Oct 22, 2013, 11:32 AM

Our YPC or whatever would be fine if we had managed to hit on one of either Marshall or Gurley. The offense isn't suddenly terrible, it's just that the talent isn't as good at the skill positions as it has been in the past. We've lost a bunch of big time recruiting battles and it has come back to haunt us on offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good point...people constantly complain that we "recruit too

many skill players", but this year I don't actually think our skill players are that good. Watkins is obviously good, but the rest are more suited as role players. Some of the younger players may develop, but Bryant has been a disappointment and McDowell isn't an every-down back.

FSU has NFL players across the board at their skill positions. While our dumps off and screen passes on the outside went for a max of 2 yards, their's were consistently going for 10+ because of talent (and our secondary's poor tackling).

DBs were playing 5+ yds. off and on their heels trying to

react instead of attack.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Part of that was probably the respect our coaching staff

Oct 22, 2013, 11:45 AM

gave to their WRs. I don't think FSU's defense had the same concerns when they were covering a Bryant, Humphries, or Williams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's because our secondary was way overmatched

Oct 22, 2013, 11:49 AM [ in reply to DBs were playing 5+ yds. off and on their heels trying to ]

Size and speed...are important and we had no one that could match Benjamin's size or Green's speed....we also can't understand that the T.E. is an eligible receiver, but that is another post all together.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It doesn't matter how good your secondary is.....

if the defensive front doesn't get pressure on the QB,

If the QB can throw 7-10 yard stop routes to wide open receivers every play...or maybe just toss it up to the 6'5 guys being covered by the 5'10 (on a tall day) guy, like they did on the first TD.

of any real DL pressure... I would prefer a sudden death with a chance of survival rather than an inevitable slow death.

It's Oline guys

When was the last 4 or 5 star o lineman? Even if you get 1 or 2 sometimes they are busts just like all players. You have to put an emphasis on linemen and Dabo has built this team out of 4 and 5 star athletes not linemen

You can win the ACC and beat up on bad teams that way but you can't beat top 10 teams with that consistently.

FSU has been doing that and now will be tough to handle for the next few years

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There aren't that many 4 and 5 Star OL guys every year.

Oct 22, 2013, 11:53 AM

On Rivals there's 28 four and five Star Offensive Tackles, 12 four and five star Offensive Guards, and 4 Offenisve Centers this year. That's 44 total.

Almost no one is going to have all 4 and 5 Star offensive lineman. There just aren't enough of them out there.
