NFL Practice Squad salary woes

Nov 14, 2018, 3:29 PM

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of these “woe is me” articles about people who chose a profession. This article highlights how a practice squad player who is employed for four weeks of training camp (is that how long it is? Just my guess) and 17 weeks of regular season “only” makes at least $133,500. For 21 weeks of work. One guy says he probably would make more if he had taken his Stanford degree to Silicon Valley. I guess it’s too bad he was forced to play practice squad in the NFL instead. But what can he do? He has no choice but to be a practice squad player in the NFL making more money than 98% of the people his age for working less than half of a year.

But wait...they are not guaranteed a job tomorrow? Oh, that’s different than the rest of us...wait...no it’s not.

The one thing I will concede is that I’m not sure why NFL salaries are so public.

For the 2018 season....

Nov 14, 2018, 3:40 PM

I'm pretty sure a practice squad players can make no less than $7,600 per week or $129,200 for the season.

How many will actually stick a full season?***

Shoot I will take the uncertainty to potentially make $7000 a week.

Yes...I believe that is correct...

Hardly poverty level by any estimation.

Just bored with the woe is me. Any thoughts on the article or just ad hominem today?

Jealous of what? I’m all for them making whatever they can.

Nov 14, 2018, 4:15 PM

Just don’t whine to the rest of us about the choice you made.

If I’m ignorant, educate me. Don’t just insult me. What “process”?

major program and then was on the 49ers practice squad for a couple years. It's not an easy life. Fortunately for him he used that money to open his own business and is doing well today. But the life of a practice squad player is rough, and yes they choose it to follow their dreams and hopefully make it to the league.
