Any historians know? Was there huge opposition back then?

I learned that a few years ago. I think it was that till sometime in the 1940's. Not sure why they changed it. Maybe because of the school since most out of the area seem to have trouble knowing where it is

from what I’ve heard. Seems changing a town’s name is a bigger deal than removing some signs on a building.

"Megginson believes that the name change from Calhoun to Clemson may have caused some tension on the town council. He makes note of the fact that by the time of the incorporation, the town council appeared to be dominated by Clemson College related individuals."
