Biggest Game Ever in Littlejohn?

Mar 4, 2015, 2:15 PM

I'm thinking early 1980 when we beat #1 Duke - that was the night the all-time attendance record in Littlejohn was set. People were sitting in each aisle, etc. I remember how loud it was.

After that game, the fire marshals said no to allowing that to happen again.

I believe it was 1990.....

Clemson defeated No. 4 UNC in the final home game of the season to win the ACC regular season title.

Of course, a few weeks later, that same team would lose on a last second shot by UConn in the Sweet 16.

Agree completely. I was a freshman that year and could only get the standing room entry. I will never forgot that night. Also, took a girl with me that was from one of my courses. It was our first time hanging out and she shows up to my dorm before the game carrying a funnel...ahh memories.

last night, cause from here on out, there will be 2k fewer seats so the donors can have their own private lounge.

season against a good State team and we could not fill it up. It's a challenge for many fans to travel 45-60 minutes each way on a week night. Last night's game was over after 11pm. Chapel Hill has empty seats on late Wednesday games...it's a tough sell.

The smaller arena will shrink the supply at the same time the team is poised to get much better. Our freshmen are improving and our recruits are looking good.

That Wake game was nuts!!! Tents everywhere prior to getting tickets. It was one big party for about 24 hrs. Duncan was on that team and I am not sure the lower bowl sat down the entire game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If memory serves me right, that was 96-97 season

Mar 4, 2015, 3:37 PM [ in reply to The Wake game in 95 or 96. Ranked 2nd.They were top 5 also.*** ]

and we were split #2 in the two polls.
I camped out for days for those tickets.. 5 tents in line when i started, then the lawn of LJ was filled by Sunday night with bonfires in metal barrels and kegs of beer in people's tents . That is one of my favorite Clemson memories. Missed classes that monday morning.. the game came down to a last second miss to tie by Clemson, and Timmy Duncan led Deacs prevailed.

The concourse was full of people standing all around entire arena. I think the final count was 13,000.

Skip Wise, Tree, Stan Rome, Colon Abraham. We had some blow out wins at home that here. Over Nc State fresh off their NC and David Thompson, seems like we beat the Tar Heels and Maryland with Lefty. There were huge crowds back then, seems like 13,000 and it was loud.

How could it not be Duke in 1990???

Mar 4, 2015, 3:38 PM

We have exactly one ACC championship of any kind in men's basketball and that was because we beat a top 5 Duke team to clinch the 1989-90 regular season title. I was a freshman and it was amazing.

I still have nightmares about losing in the sweet sixteen after that amazing comeback.

I was at the Duke game in 1980. When you looked across the court, it was a solid wall of people...there were NO aisles - just people. Two people on every other step. Back when they would not turn a student away. There was also snow on the ground.

I was a freshman that year, and I will never forget that game. they told us we had to sit one to an aisle, but that did not last. It was not just a student section. Students were all over the place.

I guess you guys missed it when Ribock, Riker, and Roche came to LJ back in the day. :) JK - but it was a huge crowd and people were crushed against the doors trying to get in. Of course we got crushed on the court too. One of my friends had to be carried away from the crowd as he was slammed pretty hard against the doors. There were thousands of students there. I guess kind of like it is today???

BTW: Those guys played for USUC and Frank McGuire when they were good.
