Jerry Butler 1977? Touchdown catch against the Coots

Jul 22, 2014, 1:17 AM

Jerry Butler made a leaping touchdown catch in the 1977 game against South Carolina in the final minute to cap a victory.

Any of you old timers remember this?

Favorite away game of all time. Sitting in the opposite endzone, listening to the cackle of the mouth breathers until the catch. That game would have been scu's greatest come back since CU was up by 24 in second half.

Cigars Today" and were flashing them to the stands and tv cameras. Then, they had it shoved down their throats. I was in opposite end zone of the catch and ran to the concession stand underneath afterward to watch replay on TV.

I was 11 yrs old and still have Steve Fuller's chinstrap from that game. We were crammed in the corner where the team comes out and I leaned over railing and got it. It was awesome!!

LOL....Remember it very well for I had to do two things

immediately following: go to the bathroom...and change my underwear.

Which is why I always never leave home without...a spare!

College kid then so could not go... had a job. Anyway, went to dinner after and next table did not know we came back to win. Got to break the news to them and the party was ON!

I was near the 10 yard line, opposite side of that end zone.

Jul 22, 2014, 7:25 AM

We were down low and all we could see was Butler extending up for "The Catch".... My first CFB game and the day I became a Tiger fan...

Yep! The "No Cigar Today" game in Columbia

Jul 22, 2014, 7:28 AM

Charley Pell had been lighting victory cigars after each win. The Capon faithful, to their credit, had quietly printed a bunch of "No Cigar Today" R-shirts, which they began gleefully sporting when UCS went ahead late.

Wonder if any of those are still around ... minus the tear stains, of course?

Entire team had victory cigars after wins.

Not that I am an "old timer", but I was there. Students were in the opposite endzone from where Butler caught the ball. I am short, only 5', so all I could see was his hands in the air catching the ball. It was a thing of beauty. One of my favorite games ever. Go Tigers!

Yep, we were in upper deck & had seen all games that year.

We got bombed in Gator Bowl vs Pitt, but we owned Jacksonville. This was the start of Clemson football as we know it now.
