Normandy 75 years ago. I can not even begin to think what they went through.

I've been binging on some WWII docs lately

the ones on AHC and other cable channels that offer actual war footage.

The one really odd thing I have noticed is that every soldier, with very few exceptions, are clean-shaven. American, British, German, Russian, Japanese, it didn't matter. And it also didn't matter if they were in the jungles of Okinawa, the swamps of France, or the subzero of Russian winter, there are no beards. A 5 o'clock shadow or two, but nothing you would call extended growth. Even the POWs in the prison camps looked like they had shaved that morning. It's amazing that all those men would take the time to shave every day in the conditions they were living in. Must have been a really high priority.

Several of the leaders had mustaches (Stalin, Hirohito, Montgomery, of course Hitler) but that's about it for facial hair in WWII.

In probably a dozen hours of footage I have watched, I recall seeing ONE soldier with a full beard, and I think he was Australian.

Jun 6, 2019, 5:10 PM [ in reply to I've been binging on some WWII docs lately ]

I ran across Robert Capa's account of Omaha Beach

Jun 6, 2019, 10:01 AM

this morning. Apparently, he was the only photographer who went along with the the troops. While Capa survived, the photos didn't... but it's still worth reading, if you can muster 5 minutes:
