Let me preface this by saying I hope he gets caught soon and is shot on the spot....multiple times.
But why is this IMMEDIATELY labeled as a Hate Crime? Because he's white and killed people of another color? How about he may be a sick individual that is obviously not sane. A sane person doesn't sit there and say, "You know, I hate black people...so I'm going to go kill a bunch of 'em." Knowing you will get caught, your life is over and a death penalty looming. He's obviously not sane. None of us know that he's a racist. He's just a sick piece of sh*t that has his time coming. I can't stand these stereotypes.

Even if the guy was a racist... the direction this is going is nuts.
Some North Charleston resident said in the newspaper that the shooting wasn't an isolated incident it was "part of the system down here." That is complete crap. When has something like that happened in Charleston before? The 60's?
And why didn't make the news when Black teenagers beat European immigrants to death with hammers in Missouri possibly because of their race?
Another article written by a black dude in Britain says "Without gun control, racism will keep killing black people." Possibly the dumbest thing every said by anyone.

My suspicion it was the statement of the one survivor he released.
This certainly looks like a "statement" killing, a guy trying to grandstand and make a point. I can almost promise you when they find this guy he's a Neo-Nazi or suchlike, and he probably got egged on or had the tacit support of at least an on-line Hatah community. They're out there, trust me, and some of them are just plain nutso, and just leave you shaking your head that some people have that much time to dedicate to their tin-foil-hatted manifestos.
Sounds like this guy was probably one of those, and I can promise you they'll probably roll up some people who at least had foreknowledge or even direct complicity of what he was up to.
This was probably the very definition of a "hate" crime, regrettably.
I did live in Charleston for awhile...the problem with the neighborhoods being so close (like, literally, in Downtown you can just walk across the street from a $1,500-a-month apartment to the housing projects in some cases), is that this guy could just walk in from a white neighborhood. Downtown has always been kind of an odd mix of Old South Money and plain old-fashioned poverty...you don't ordinarily see such disparate communities as close together as they are in Chucktown.

I don't know if he lived there or not. Point is, it's one thing to park your car in a white neighborhood (of course, parking one's car in Downtown Charleston is always a trick), and then walk across the street. Nobody would notice you until you were done, and then you could blend back into the crowd.
It's another thing ENTIRELY to drive into North Charleston and pull that crap. You wouldn't make it out of the neighborhood.

Doesn't change the nature of what they did. I'll admit, when I saw that someone shot people in an AME church, I didn't want it to be a white racist. But since it is, let's call a spade a spade. On the other hand, we should recognize that this kind of thing (racially motivated violence against black people) is fortunately just as random and isolated as other mass killings.

Has a very limited number of people, but there is a very diverse racial assortment. I haven't seen the interviews that apparently shed light on what role hate may have played, but I'm wondering if it was more of a religious hate crime than a racial one?

If the authorities had half a brain, they would look closely at all his friends, and their friends.
I am sure facebook has a record of it before it was deleted.
Since he is not caught yet , it sounds like some decent probable cause.
Someone knew about this or helped him in some way, they are just as guilty for not reporting him.

At least 10 people have deleted him as friends since the first time I looked his page up. He is down to 80 friends. One of the ones from his high school posted that they got 35 friend requests this morning from people trying to hunt him down. His profile picture has been shared almost 2000 times now.

Half of the people I have on my friend list on Facebook I barely know and almost never interact with.
This was a hate crime. Plain and simple.

That is up to the FBI to decide. I say they should look there and put them in their database, possibly look into the most likely offenders like people with criminal backgrounds, strong political, racial, or religious views.
After all we wouldn't want to not have done all we could to prevent another tragedy.

(which does happen) I would agree with you, but in this particular case i believe the first person to call it a hate crime was the police chief himself. I don't believe he would've said that without evidence to support it.

No it's considered a hate crime because he was arrested for a hate crime in February. He was also reported as making statements to the effect of exterminate all "N******". He openly blamed African Americans for the decline of society, and a wide variety of other issues. He was actually in the Church for 1 hour before he began shooting. At one point even sat down with them during the prayer meeting and at the end of the church service he stood up and shot everyone. This was a racially motivated hate crime.

There are people with sick, disgusting minds that do terrible things....it's not always out of hate, imo. Somebody robs a bank, liquor store.....may have an addiction. I've read and reread your post several times,scratching my head. All I can conclude is that you are mostly motivated by defending this killers whiteness. You patronizingly preface your remarks by saying he should be shot, but your outrage isn't what he did....you're upset that it was how the crime was characterized.. I was raised in SC and have seen it's racism all of my life. The history of SC is replete with evidence of racial hatred perpetrated by the white ruling class. Where I grew up (Hampton and Seneca) there was town and then their was N***** town, usually across the tracks. They lived in shacks and us white people lived in regular housing with running water and indoor toilets. I remember "Men" "Women" and "Colored" bathrooms at stores and the courthouse. After the civil war and up until 1968 160 blacks were lynched. "Redlining" by banks was routine. I remember Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats fighting integration. It went on and on and on and the WHOLE time, men like you, argued that Blacks had made their own bed. They were lazy, slovenly and didn't want to work to get a head...etc, etc.
In this situation, a clearly disturbed hate-filled white man drives past literally hundreds of targets of opportunity where he can "insanely" kill people....and instead drives directly to the most historic black church in the state. Goes into a prayer meeting, listens for an hour and then announces that he's killing those praying because they're black and guns down 9 of them. But somehow, your outraged that it's "immediately labeled a Hate crime". ! You choose to believe that it's not because he's a racist, it's because he's crazy. You choose this "different take"
You are defending his whiteness. It's not a "hate crime" he's just crazy. You end your post with "I can't stand these Stereotypes". In effect your defending his race and your own race.
In my opinion your the worst kind of racist...you hide it. You say the obligatory "politically correct" phrases and names in public, but at heart your outraged that a white man is accused of a hate crime when he guns down innocent black people in a prayer meeting. That's what bothers you, because it's labeled as about race.
I respect your right to hold any views that you hold, however noxious I may find them. But your stereotype is: Your likely a white male who self identifies as Christian. The information was IMMEDIATELY known to the police who characterized it as a hate crime. It was designated a hate crime be law enforcement upon arrival and discovering what actually happened.
But here is a tip: If a white guy goes into a black church and kills 9 innocent black people he's never met....it's a hate crime. You don't have to wait till the press says so...it's patently obvious to the most casual observer that the shooter has a problem with black people. It's not a media problem, it's not a perception problem. A 9 year old can see that it's a racially motivated hate crime the moment they hear what happened.

Two other things it could have been instead of a hate crime are:
1) A deranged sick atheist/muslim/(fill in the blank) that wanted to target a church and happened to pick that one for whatever non racially motivated reason
2) He had a personal vendetta against one of more of the people attending the service on an individual level and the others were in the wrong place at the wrong time
See? Two logical reason of what COULD have transpired that has nothing to do with a hate crime as generally thought of

No one jumped to conclusions. In this case where the survivor immediately told police what happened and they(law enforcement) immediately labeled it as a hate crime. Not the media but the first responders.
There were no what if's or alternate theories. Officer's asked survivor what happened and survivor says killer shot us because "he said" we were black and then gave a description of the shooter.
(white guy).
I understand that people want to make a case against the "liberal" media jumping to conclusions, but this isn't the time and this certainly isn't the case.

But when a gunman walks into an African American church and says "I'm here to kill black people," and proceeds to shoot and kill nine black people, then that's probably a hate crime right there. The police knew the facts. The survivors told them. So, they labeled it correctly as a hate crime. Correctly and immediately. Why this offends the OP, I don't know. It's not political. It's not talking points for a Fox News and the NRA to go buy more guns. It's nine people who shouldn't have died. That should be the focus, not this junk.

This was the definition of hate crime.
He said he was going to kill black people. He has pics of white supremacy flags on his coat, etc.
why is this not a hate crime?
