May 8, 2014, 11:45 AM

nobody even got hurt in a fight, much less died. You just got up, dusted yourself off, maybe threw a slab of meat on the black-eye (I saw that on Bonanza once) or sewed up the cuts yourself (Roadhouse), and you were right back in business. Or at least that's what a lot of dumb-aces who've never been in or seen a real fight think.

excluded shovels. I know in most street/bar fights, the combatants negotiate and agree to the rules beforehand, then adhere to them no matter what, all for the sake of safety and fairness.

Would you not say there are unspoken rules in a fight?

May 8, 2014, 12:49 PM

Generally fights like the one in the video are about humiliating the other person by imposing yourself physically on them. They're not about killing the person, or permanently injuring them. Obviously people don't always follow these rules, but I think the people who don't "fight fair" ought to be prosecuted. That way we don't have to prosecute everybody involved in a fight, but we still keep things orderly.

In this fight, they actually agreed on some rules beforehand and another girl said she would pull somebody off the other one in certain circumstances. Obviously the rules weren't followed, and that's what leads to a much more dangerous situation.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You'd sure think so, from watching tv. If you go into a

May 8, 2014, 1:25 PM

real fight thinking that, good luck, you'll probably wind up in the hospital.

When people get hurt or highly pi$$ed off, like in this video, rules go out the window. And in most fights, somebody feels pain or gets pi$$ed off, which is why it's freaking stupid to fight in the first place.

Well, no, not "from watching tv"

May 9, 2014, 4:08 PM

The mindset that you seem to have, which is that all the rules go out the window "when people get hurt or highly pi$$ed off," is exactly why people have decided to criminalize any fighting (or, in sports, to suspend just about anybody who fights). Inasmuch as we're never going to get rid of fighting or be able to replace physical altercations with laws or law enforcement, people ought to stick to "the rules." When somebody doesn't, they're the ones that should be prosecuted.

To expect that people stick to certain rules when fighting is no more to take fighting lightly than it is to take war lightly because we have rules of war. No, those rules aren't always followed, but when people break those rules they lose respect (which is usually part of the reason for the altercation in the first) and they should be sanctioned.

Re: Would you not say there are unspoken rules in a fight?

May 8, 2014, 2:04 PM [ in reply to Would you not say there are unspoken rules in a fight? ]

I agree. In my opinion, if you feel the need to use a weapon or resort to cheap shots, you're just a b****. Take your a** whipping like a man, or woman in this case, and move on. Usually the people who use weapons against an unarmed person, know they will get beat so they have to grab an equalizer. The simple solution would be to avoid the fight if you know you are going to get your a** handed to you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here's my point: Fighting is stupid.

May 8, 2014, 3:43 PM

These girls are rednecks, and they are stupid. Look at the result.

Fighting, even without shovels, often goes wrong, and results in life altering injuries. Sure a dust-up between buddies who have a disagreement probably takes place with some unwritten rules, and usually doesn't result in permanent damage, but then again, sometimes it does. People get pi$$ed off and things can escalate quickly, just like it did here. It happens more than people realize. The solution isn't that certain unwritten rules should be followed when fighting; the solution is not to fight in the first place, unless defending yourself or your property, or other innocent people.

Now, if you are gonna have a "fight" with preconditions and rules, and neither party is really gonna try to hurt the other or inflict any serious pain or damage, then it's not really a fight.

In the real world, there are no rules nor is there anything such as a "fair fight". you fight to win, end of discussion.

May 8, 2014, 5:03 PM [ in reply to Re: Would you not say there are unspoken rules in a fight? ]

no real intention of hurting or inflicting any real pain on the other person, it's not really a fight, it's just a schoolboy slapfest or rasslin match. Unfortunately, the rules often change as the contest progresses, somebody gets pi$$ed and all of a sudden Mr. Toughguy finds himself in a real fight.

If there are no rules, and there is intent to do harm, then it's a real fight and you'd be a Thomdamn fool not to do whatever is necessary to win as quickly and as decisively as possible.

And this is why we can't have nice things

May 9, 2014, 4:14 PM

This is a good example of the breakdown of self- government because of the belief that it's more important to get ahead, by whatever means, than it is to "follow the rules" holding you back. When everyone believes that nobody is following the rules, whether they are or not, the "unwritten rules" become entirely untenable and you end up with laws enforced by governments.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a circular argument

May 9, 2014, 4:10 PM [ in reply to Re: Would you not say there are unspoken rules in a fight? ]

When you assume that people won't fight fair, you don't fight fair. Given that "nobody fights fair," then all fighting should be sanctioned and "all fighting is stupid."

But it's simply not true that everybody just "fights to win, end of discussion." Those who do, as another poster said, are "#######" and should be proscuted.

But the girl who threw the shovel should be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. They both agreed to fight, but threatening to go get a gun and then throwing a shovel at somebody's head is uncalled for.
