https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/08/30/california-on-verge-of-mandating-women-on-company-boards-with-bill-headed-to-governor/
If Brown signs the bill, the one-woman mandate will take effect by the end of 2019. By the end of 2021, the bill calls for at least two women on the board if a company has five directors, and at least three women if it has six directors. Companies would be fined for non-compliance.
****
The fact sheet for Jackson’s bill cites European countries’ example. Germany mandates that companies’ boards must be 30 percent female, while Norway, France and others require company boards to be 40 percent female.
Under the California bill, a first violation would draw a $100,000 fine, and subsequent violations would be $300,000. Companies that fail to file information about their board directors with the Secretary of State in a timely manner would also be fined $100,000.

If a company wants to handle its business under the strong arm of such state regulations that's between the company and the state. California is a big state but it's not that far to the state line.

Egg zachary my opinion. Let then do what they want to do. You can always go to another state. I do have a problem if the federal government mandates stuff like this nationwide. But if a state wants to go this route, sobeit.
Also not very keen on federal contracts being reserved for only minority or female owned businesses. That's a whole other story. Guy was arrested and sentenced recently for bidding on government contracts directed for minority-owned companies only. He set up shell companies run by women/minorities to win the bids. Then did the work. On time. And under budget. Still, he's in jail now.

It’s stupid. It’s an over-reach. But by all means,California, do it. A lot of very successful companies with no discriminatory patterns or intentions...or heck, out-right progressive organizations will still see that kind of government involvement and question if they want to invest there or perhaps somewhere that, if they have three men on their six person board, they have cut the field in half for finding the next board member.
Again...I fully support California being allowed to do this. Just as I support NY offering free tuition and both CA and NY providing universal healthcare. Make gun ownership as difficult as possible. Do all these things. Someone has to show the rest of us what utopia looks like.
