an amazing tale of treasure, romance, betrayal, and other intriguing words. Just kiddin'. But this is pretty neat.
I connected with the Supervisor of Athletic Grounds at Clemson before the Notre Dame game, as I was intredasted in the white oak tree in Memorial Stadium that was being removed. Then, things went to shit when we had a 1,000 Year rainstorm, and suddenly, the Supervisor of Athletic Grounds at Clemson is too busy for me, as apparently he values parking for thousands of alumni over me getting wood (uh huh huh).
I tracked him down this past Sunday before we left town. He directed me to said wood. I brought a few chunks home that would fit in the family truckster. Returned yesterday with dad, a pickup truck, and a chainsaw. We grabbed about 900 lbs. of wooden gold yesterday. Dig it:
Dad makes all kinds of stuff in his woodshop, but he's been turning out some beautiful pens over the past 5 years. He got hold of some wood from one of the 150 year old live oaks in the USCe Horseshoe that had to be removed in 2013 after being struck by lightning. He's since sold hundreds of pens to USCe fans and alums, because they're badass. He sent one to Harris Pastides, and got a nice handwritten thank you letter:
I don't give a turd about USCe pens, because that school and it's fans are stupid. I DO care about Clemson doe, so I've been keeping an eye open for such an opportunity. The tree that was removed, #260021, is one of the most recognizable on the entire campus, besides maybe the giant in front of Tillman Hall.
I started scouring google for images of the tree. Here's a few:
Here's the site where 56" oak previously stood:
Here's a serious badass cutting up a legendary tree:
So, we'll start hacking up some of this stuff in the next few weeks, drying it out in a kiln or dehydrator, stabilizing it, and then start making some superawesome pens out of Memorial Stadium wood. Anybody want one? Dad also makes razor handles, letter openers, pill caddies, suction ######, and other items out of wood, so you're not limited to just pens.
If we get at least 15 people who want pens, we'll create a PEN15 club.

rollerball, like the one Pastides has, will likely be around $90, give or take. Would include a name, and I'm working on getting various paws and other logos. The Clemson crest with graduation year would be sweet. I'll show errbody what we put together for Clements, DRad, etc.

your quota. Also, you JUST moved there, so you don't get to make the "you ain't from 'round here" claim yet. You may have just had your PEN15 Club membership revoked, amigo. Would definitely be interdasted in one. My grandparents sit in the handicap section right in front of where that tree used to be. Needless to say my grandma was a little sad to see it go after so many years. Would be neat to give something like this to her. Any idea when you guys might have some ready? Say around Christmas-ish?
