An extended family trip to lake Thurmond:
Found I no longer had the strength to pull myself up on water skis
Slept in cabin with father who snored loud enough to make the luan paneling shake
Got my 1st fire ant bite

Jan 27, 2018, 12:01 PM

Is what I heard from the backseat when we were about 30 miles from the beach. Got that cleaned up, hoping it was just something he ate or car sickness, we continued on to the beach.
Got in the door of the beach condo, Blaghghggg!!!!!! again all over the floor and couch.
We were sharing this place with my brother and his family and I didn’t want them to get sick so I bought a bunch of cleaning supplies and spent the week cleaning after everything my family touched. Eventually my wife caught it and got so bad she had to go to urgent care.
Thanks to my cleaning efforts I don’t recall anyone else getting sick though.

Napa Valley ... over rated!

Jan 27, 2018, 1:52 PM

Napa Valley ... way expensive hotels and meals ... and 100+ degrees when we we’re there ... for me, the whole thing is highly over-rated ... wish we’d have used those two days to extend our Yosemite visit. Then it might have been the best vacation ever.

agree on the over rated. Loved the Bay area but should have skipped the snobby wine folks.

LA 2013. No offense to anyone who lives in Los Angeles, but the city is a trash hole. Homeless people literally line the sidewalks, traffic is unbelievable, overpriced hotels, food, you name it. The only decent part is Rodeo Drive and the tour of Beverly Hills they give, but we went on the one day it rained in Southern California, and the risk of mudslides cut the tour short. Go figure. The only saving grace was visiting the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, but it was the middle of June and it was (no joke) 112 degrees in the Valley that day. Hot and miserable the whole time. Not a great trip

Borrowed my dads camper about 5 years ago in July and camped at Hawe creek campground in McCormick. A storm rolled through there just an hour or so before we got there and knocked the power out for a day and half. That week and weekend happened to be one of the hottest weeks on record in years. We got there on Thursday evening and didn’t have power till Saturday morning sometime. We were supposed to stay till Sunday but we packed up and came home Saturday afternoon. I remember sweating at 2:00 in the morning and getting in the car and turning the ac on. We also had our first son who was 5 months old at the time. But nothing is better than walking into your own house and laying in your own bed when you get back home. Oh and we had a flat on the camper on the way down there and the second I stepped outside of the car to change the tire I started sweating profusely. It was pure T miserable.

Cost me an extra thousand in cash, extra fees, hotel, ground transportation etc.

Leaving Rome, headed to Dublin. It was a “public service strike” day. Had to wait an hour for a taxi and they were really expensive. Didn’t realize that there were two international airports in Rome, ended up going to the wrong one. Had to take another taxi to the correct airport, which was on the other side of the city. Cost a lot of money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Man, I’ve got one for you.........

Jan 27, 2018, 4:19 PM

About 7 years ago, went to Italy. Home base was Rome, but travelled around to Venice, Florence and Naples to see Pompeii and the amalfi coast.
So, we took the train down to Naples. When we arrived at the train station around 7am, we were approached by 3 uniformed “police officers” with a canine who stopped us and said the dog alerted to us and our luggage and they wanted us to come with them. They started leading us to a side door in the station. We told them that this was ridiculous, that we didn’t have any drugs and we wanted to see someone of higher rank. They said no and once again began moving us again in the same direction. Finally, we told them we weren’t taking another step until our request was honored and I started getting very loud and vulgar, drawing a lot of attention in the middle of the station and they took off.
We checked into our hotel and then took a bus a few miles so we could see the bay and Mt.Vesuvius. While on the bus, and right after a stop, a bunch of thugs boarded the bus, surrounded my wife and I and started trying to go into and take our backpacks. We were punching, kicking and yelling but no one on the bus helped us. At the next stop, they all jumped off. This all happened in the first two hours.
Finally, that night we wanted to go to supposedly a small restaurant a few blocks from the hotel which allegedly was the oldest pizza restaurant in Italy with the best brick oven pizza in the country. Which it truly turned out to be. We finished eating and were speaking with some german tourists on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant when a scooter went racing by with 2 people on it. As they passed, the guy on the back shot me in the back with one of those guns that shoot the rubber bullets like the riot cops use. It hurt like hell and the tourist pulled the bullet out of my shirt. THIS ALL HAPPENED OUR FIRST DAY IN NAPLES! And yes, we stayed in a great hotel right in the heart of town. I won’t even go into our short train ride to pompeii the next day. Moral of the story, never stop in Naples!!

out of my shirt. MY FIRST DAY IN NAPLES. And we stayed in a great hotel right in the middle of town!

Out at Georgetown hole. Had three blackfin hooked. Coastguard inflatable from nearby cutter decides to come do a check, so we had to stop reeling. By the time they were done, sharks had completed our job. Fish gods repaid us with 2 sail hookups to finish the day, though, so not a total loss.

Hunting Island State Park about 45 years ago. Mom and dad took my sis and me there for a week of camping in our 20 foot Shasta travel trailer. No AC and in it was August. Invaded by millions of tiny biting sand flies that could come through the screens. I can picture the hot sauna nights in that trailer being eaten alive today. Thankfully after three days my parents decided they were running low on blood from those little suckers and we packed up and went home.

Re: Worst Vacation Experience :

Jan 30, 2018, 6:12 AM

My ex wife and I went on a mission trip to Mexico, with my grandfather, who was a missionary to a few orphanages run by Christian families. We considered this to be a vacation, while moonlighting for the Big Guy. With contacts like that, what could go wrong.. Am I right?

Unbeknownst to us, a local fellow was offended by our presence, which resulted in him exacting his revenge against us. Apparently, this "Montezuma" wields quite a bit of influence in the area and always has the last laugh.

Gushing like a casino fountain on the Vegas strip, my ex wife, who deserved her punishment like a card counter in said casino, learned two phrases in Espanola. "More toilet paper please" for the housekeeper, and "I'm sorry" for the maintenance man, upon learning that the paper isn't really for the toilet. It wasn't until we left Paradise, I realized that, I too, was cursed because of this beguiled woman.

We eventually made it back to our vehicle, a loaner from the wicked mother in law of the East, to drive the remainder of the trip back to the Lowcountry. It was in Atlanta, on the side of the road during rush hour, that I realised that Uncle bubba wasn't a certified mechanic. The battle of little bighorn was well underway, as we bunkered down in a hotel, while waiting for reinforcements.

The Calvary arrived with a vintage car dolly belonging to the infamous bubba... Twice and shame on me. Doubled over in pain, in laws arguing, and car swinging violently behind us, I prayed for an honor death. At one point the car became unbridled. With her husband screaming "hit the gas" the mother in law overshot the dolly and the car took it's final gasp..rip. The tow truck driver provided a decent remount, but it was his parting words that were invaluable. "Y'all should have it in park, cause them back wheels will roll."

We drove away and were promptly pulled over by a deputy sheriff, for an illegal U turn. It was then that, i revisited the idea of an honor killing. He saw the desperation in my eyes and wanted to help, but with his shift ending and endless paperwork...

After two days in the bed, I developed walking pneumonia. Would that be considered oxymoronic, irony, both, or just make me an ironic moran? I know this story was quite long, but the therapist said that it was good for me to talk about it.
