I played soccer. I enjoyed playing soccer. I think soccer

Jun 12, 2014, 1:42 PM

is boring to watch.

Because I think the sport is boring to watch, having fun with oversensitive soccer fan becomes a better, more enjoyable & more watchable sport than the actual boring match.

luvdemtgrs, i'm sorry. no offense intended, all in good fun & that might be completely selfish or horrible on my part in your eyes. I understand if so.

I have seen soccer fan deliver numbers since I first watched Pele & Chinaglia with the Cosmos back in the mid/late 70s in Tampa against the Rowdies.

"You" wield those numbers as if to make yourself feel better about your particular choice. I don't know if that's why you do it, but it seems a lot of soccer fans find comfort in them? I honestly don't get that and never will, but it's blood in the water to me. My bad. ;)

Enjoy your day/week/month in this World Cup year.

Sincerely.

no no, no offense taken. Numbers not on here for me

more for perspective for other folks that may not have any.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

kewl, but that's partly my point. who needs a perspective

Jun 12, 2014, 2:11 PM

to know whether they like something or not? i don't and anyone that does seems to fall into the "group" i mentioned... call it going full Linus & needing a security blanket in the knowing, "this many others watch too".

How many people that you might be speaking to on this site don't know that soccer is the "world's sport"?

maybe it's just me, but if you like something, just like & to h3ll with anyone else. well, unless the popo is involved.

enjoy your wc, luvdem.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's because liking soccer (for many) is a cultural identifier

Jun 12, 2014, 1:47 PM [ in reply to OK I like baseball. If someone says they don't like it, then ]

If you like it, it means you're a cosmopolitan and aren't narrowly focused on the US (you know, they think people who don't like socccer should "get out of Chapin more often"). These people even usually use the same words to talk about soccer that the English do ("matches," "the pitch," "side," "The US are playing well today" instead of "The US is playing well today") despite the fact that American English has plenty of good words to talk about the sport already. So the idea is that you're a rube if you don't like watching "soccer" "games" on a "soccer field" where your team "is" doing well. It all just seems very affected.

Pretty ironic, considering soccer is looked at as a lower class sport in England.

Looked at as a lower class sport in England?

Jun 12, 2014, 2:01 PM

C'mon Cam. You can do better than this. Not real sure how the lower class are able to pump billions into the English economy.

Could be a cultural identifier to some. I guess in the same sense that when some use "ghay", "sissy", "commie", etc when describing it.

BTW, 99% of all commentary on TV uses the same words below so it would be expected that regular viewers adopt the same terminology.

Just like terms we all use that are synonymous with other sports like "diamond", "nickel", "dribble drive". These terms don't mean you are some kind of say baseball hipster, it's just that you adopt the same words that everyone else is using.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

English soccer is definitely a working class/ lower class...

Jun 12, 2014, 2:14 PM

sport, which is why it's so ironic that, in the US, being a soccer fan is a sign of your cosmopolitanism. I'm not saying that's the way it is for everybody, but it's definitely that way for a lot of the soccer fans I know of. A lot of them act like US sports are beneath them because they're not sufficiently international or something.

Jun 12, 2014, 1:56 PM [ in reply to Did you mean "runs" ]

But I'd guess there are more runs scored/ hour in baseball than there are goals scored/ hour in soccer.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

More? Probably

Jun 12, 2014, 2:02 PM

but insignificant.

There is no way you can justify baseball being more exciting than soccer beyond personal preference.

Probably less action/movement in baseball than any other team sport out there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't quite understand folks getting upset

Jun 12, 2014, 1:15 PM [ in reply to It's amazing how defensive soccer fans get whenever ]

Over either liking something someone else doesn't like or vice versa.

With that said, the initial post wasn't just a "I don't like Soccer" post, it simply said no American male would choose Soccer over Golf. Which is patently untrue.

And the good thing is both are televised and can be watched by whomever wishes.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, what the post said that no American male

Jun 12, 2014, 1:17 PM

Would have a tough time choosing between the World Cup and the US Open. That's probably true. If you're a freedom-loving capitalist, the choice is easy for the US Open. If you're a communist, the choice is easy for the World Cup.

Jun 12, 2014, 1:43 PM [ in reply to More Americans will watch the WC than will watch the ]

Don't think most Americans are all that interested in watching soccer games between countries we don't care about. Maybe some of your city dwelling people who are overly concerned with looking cosmopolitan are, but your average dude isn't going to watch Brazil vs. Croatia.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To each their own

Jun 12, 2014, 1:50 PM

Though I find it funny you'd feel the need to question the motivations of folks who will be eagerly watching the world cup.

I will. Because I like Soccer, and this is Soccer being played at the highest level.

Though, I don't much care if other folks watch it or not.

Again, to each their own.

I'll watch the US play, but only because of national pride

Jun 12, 2014, 1:54 PM

It's kind of like watching some of the olympic sports where nobody even knows the rules just to see our enemies crushed, to see them driven before us, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll be watching every game I can simply because I enjoy the sport.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure how you would measure it

Jun 12, 2014, 2:04 PM [ in reply to Soccer sux ]

but I bet it brazil/croatia will be the highest rated single tv event/show of the week in the US.

Obviously ratings will be higher next week when the US plays.

But to say the "average dude" won't watch it is flat out wrong.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm just not sure it's that mainstream yet

Jun 12, 2014, 2:19 PM

Frankly, I don't actually think soccer sucks, I'm just trying to get a rise out of you. What I'm more annoyed with is the linguistic affectations and the fan behavior borrowed from other countries (http://online.wsj.com/articles/why-i-hate-american-soccer-fans-1402012291), combined with ESPN's attempts to make soccer a "thing" in the US. If people like it enough- which probably will have something to do with how good at it we get- it'll become popular. Until then, it'd be nice if people would quit trying to so hard to make soccer happen.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is not remotely true.

Jun 12, 2014, 1:07 PM

There are a growing number of socialists and communists in this country, and they will definitely be watching the World Cup.
