Won't be popular, but our roster is not elite compared

to the teams we've lost to recently...lsu, ohio St, Bama...

Our safeties and depth at certain positions is tearing it's head. And we refuse to go to the transfer market.

It's just a fact that the best of the best are utilizing the transfer portal to build at certain positions. We've got guys playing at safety and LB who have no business playing at an elite program.

This is a mild critique and we are still gonna be in the picture. But it's gonna continue to get harder and harder for us as these teams keep building their roster with some elite transfers like Sermon and Fields, and like Lsu with Burrow and those receivers.

You are correct. Everybody wants to blame coaches, refs, bad calls etc, but the truth is this team just didn't have the horses. OSU was way more physical than we were. They won both sides of the line and they had a 240 lb RB that was running over our guys. It took 2 or 3 guys to bring him down most plays. If we want to compete at the level, we've got to improve the overall talent anyway we can .

link

Ohio St was also more talented last year.

We've got a generational qb and rb who can make you look silly.

But just too to bottom, we've got roster issues compared to Bama and Ohio St.

That's just reality. Doesn't mean we suck and can't win it all. But we have to be more perfect than these other teams

This is quite true

While Nolan turner is better than his ranking was, he still isn’t what we should have at that position compared to what other elite teams have. Zanders also has no business starting for a top 25 team. Gotta do better recruiting a few spots. Overall an elite roster but the defects show clearly in games with more elite teams talent wise

OH was way more fresh as well.
That was the difference mentally and physically in the game.
You put our same Tiger team(say we played 6 games and only 1 i. the last 34 days) and we roll them. The deck was stacked.

If Alabama and Saban get ambushed down in Miami, then this above should be etched into stone. Until then, it's interesting conversation.

We always have such small guys on defense

Our secondary is full of skinny undersized dudes. I can’t expect those guys to pull down a 230 lb RB. They play hard but not elite.

If they're undersized then the reward is you get speed in return. But a couple aren't even fast or smart. You cant continue to let wide receivers much less tight ends get behind the secondary. Sure it might happen once a game or twice if your playing an elite team. But half a dozen times against OSU and LSU. No way.

There are reasons these players are entering the portal. It’s simply not working for ‘them’ at whatever school they are leaving and it’s typically not the schools “issue.” Its typically the player or the players perspective on something.

Winning at all costs and potentially risking culture on a great player that potentially has an attitude problem just isn’t worth the risk.

I’ll take culture and stability over “one and done” any day. Just ask LSU now.

I don't think every transfer guy is a bad guy. Similar to recruiting

You have to pick your spots.

And I'm just saying that it's gonna be harder for us in playoff situations.

We don't suck or anything like that. We will be back in playoffs next year. But top to bottom we are not as talented as these other teams. It's just reality.

If you think our culture is going to be decimated by a couple O-line transfers you apparently don't have much faith on Dabo's abilities.

I’d take LSU’s season last year if it meant having an off year this year. LSU knows they’ll be back. They had the players, just made some stupid hires.

We need to worry about ourselves first.

Our roster is also not elite compared to teams we've beat

lately. There was a graphic on here recently that showed the number of 5-star recruits and NFL players that came from all of the CFP football teams in recent years, and we were far behind Bama, Ohio St, and others, in spite of having winning or break-even records against most of them over the past few years.

I agree but the last two years it has started to show more than in the past. You tell me which top 5 team Turner, Sanders, or Venables would have started at this year. We seem to have a different attitude than in the past few years. Most on here will not like it but one problem we have is when we get big leads we should use that time to develop players. DJ should have had at least the 2nd team to throw to and block not those that should never see the field.

Last year we beat an Ohio State team that was more elite

than us. In 2018 we destroyed a more elite Alabama team with players like Hunter Renfrow and Nolan Turner, both who no other major school would give a shot, playing critical roles.

position. When you get to the CFP, no team is better than the other team at every single position. As for Turner, we are better with him in there than when he's out, and that includes some much more highly rated, more "elite" players behind him.

Overall. And our DL coaching isn't close to the same level compared to Brooks and Hobby.

If we didn't have elite qb play, this wouldn't be a playoff team.

A little perspective here. Are we really complaining about

our talent level? We're a top 1-4 team every year. We had the #3 ranked recruiting class in 2020. We currently have the #5 ranked class in 2021. Seriously?

that we have one of the top recruiting classes every year, have the best facilities in college football, and have the highest paid coaching staff in college football.

If we lack elite talent, we are either not recruiting well, aren’t developing it well, or aren’t game planning/scheming well. Either way, it’s on the coaches to figure it out.

in the CFP Semifinal! We've played in the CFP 6 years in a row! We've won the National Championship twice in the last 6 years! We currently have the two highest recruiting classes in Clemson history! If we have the impression that we are not elite or that we are somehow failing because we did not win it all, we have become a spoiled, delusional fanbase.

Our weaknesses were exposed last night. Namely, an offensive line that never jelled, a very young back end on defense, and a young front 7 on defense. You're right about missing Ross.

Except for TL, ETN and Amari we were very inexperienced on offense. Played most of the year without Ngata and Ladson. Throw in the lack of any real team prep in the offseason due to Covid.

We're a staple on the CFP. The defense with a year of real prep and development should be lights out next year. DJ has already shown we'll be fine at QB. Bring back Ross and healthy Ngata and Ladson along with William's and a more developed Ajou and all the TE. RB will be a spirited competition. OL is the link that needs to be addressed.

The angst is misplaced. We got whipped last night, just like with LSU last year. It happens, but only once in a blue moon at Clemson anymore. Success brings a sense of entitlement sadly, as it shows is spades here. Just like it did at OSU when they couldnt beat us, or at Bama when they dont win it all. I'll tolerate the entitlement to remain in the rarified air we're breathing and will continue to breathe

False

We were averaging around number nine. It took fourth playoff appearances and two national championships before we had our first top-five recruiting class. All Ohio State has to do to have a top-five recruiting class is turn on the fax machine. And their two best players last night were transfer players.

A big issue is that Clemson was just very young on both the OL and DL last year. The starting four on the DL is two sophomores and two true freshmen. The starting OL had two juniors and a senior, but literally every backup was a freshman.

OSU saw and the exploited what weve have all talked about this season. Our oline is no where near National Championship caliber. Carmen regressed, Stewart is not a top 10 team player, and then youth. They did not respect the run game and at times only brought 6 and shut it down. Last night was a night to go Mike leach on them and have trevor throw it 50+ times. He only had like 7 incompletions. I honestly think the game would've been in the 50's if we had just thrown on them.

and as long as we play almost flawless football, don't suffer any in-game injuries or ejections and don't have to play our 2nd-stringers compromised of an unusually high amount of "home grown" 2-stars and family members, we'll win.

WHATEVER we do, I sure hope we NEVER get a transfer player. Those guys are CANCERS!

Justin Fields - CANCER!
Joe Burrow - CANCER!

on defense for the 2016 Championship team vs this year’s. Almost identical in experience and slightly “less talented” according to stars on the 2016 team. Not much though. Again, almost identical. However when you look at the names, you definitely remember a more aggressive and powerful defense, especially on the DL and at LB.

Not sure the best way to say this but I wonder sometimes if we aren’t becoming a victim of our own success. The recruiting classes have gotten supposedly better but are we getting the guys that are really hungry? It seems like we’ve had some highly-touted guys who haven’t panned out for different reasons on both sides of the ball.
