What is reason for our offensive line woes? last three years

Jan 10, 2014, 11:43 AM

we have been ranked #104 in 2013, #94 in 2012, and #97 in 2011 for sacks allowed. I know some blame recruiting but I find it hard to believe 90 something teams are bringing in better oline talent than us. I know many on tnet regard Robbie Caldwell as a great oline coach but it hasn't seemed to transfer to his time here. Ellington with Arizona is a prime example of what a good rb can do behind a good line. Just seems we have improved in every area on the team except for this position.

and a weak offensive line.

Excuse me, I know facts bother whiners

More passes, more plays will equal more sacks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Woes?? Where do we rank in number of passes attempted??..

Jan 10, 2014, 11:55 AM

we throw a lot and not after pounding the ball throwing play action and without max protection. It takes more than one specific "statistic" to evaluate the performance of an offensive line. Where does GaTech rank for sacks allowed? Maybe they have the best pass blocking line in the country!!

any stretch but you dont win 32 games in 3 years if you have OL woes.....

come back with the sacks per play and sacks per pass play

rankings and let's see where we stand(honestly don't know)... considering we run 30% more plays than most teams, our ranking will probably always look poor compared to most if you just look at rankings based on total #s

I think our O- line has been pretty good

Jan 10, 2014, 12:20 PM

But I also think that having a QB that liked to scramble around rather than throwing the ball away cost us a few sacks. The fact that we are rushing for 170- 190 yards/ game and are so prolific passing should tell you that the OL is fine.

Agreed

Jan 10, 2014, 12:25 PM

I remember a ton of plays where Tajh could've thrown it away, but instead ran forward through the pocket. SOmetimes, he made a few yards, sometimes he got tackled for a sack.

Cam we should only discuss offensive line play

Jan 10, 2014, 12:26 PM [ in reply to I think our O- line has been pretty good ]

We seem to agree on this topic.

The safety was classic bad Tahj. If he throws it on time, as the play dictates, to Bryant or throws it out of bounds on time, it doesn't happen. Instead he looked at Bryant, pulled the ball down, ran into a defender and then tried throwing it away. You can only block a good D-1 player for so long. This is something Boyd is going to have to make huge strides in if he wants to see the field in the NFL.

I mean, heck...

Jan 10, 2014, 12:39 PM

we ran the ball really well on what was supposed to be a pretty good OSU front seven. It just seems like to me that people are looking for something to complain about with our team, and the OL is the only thing that they can find that's plausible.

Talent and Development

Jan 10, 2014, 1:40 PM

or rather, the lack of development. That is, all aspects of development, primarily that not the responsibility of the OL coach.

I would say the combination of

more passing attempts, WRs that are near impossible to cover, means more blitz packages to rush the QB, which in turn means that when we run the ball, we may be doing so often against some form of a blitz.
