Nine-game conference schedule is here to stay, at least for now

The move to a nine-game conference schedule looks to be a fixture in the league - at least for now - and it's a move that former head coach Tommy Bowden calls a mistake. Full Story »

making anybody do this, but rather the ADs who voted on it.

Also, if this is bad for Clemson (and it seems to be), and we didn't vote for it, I fail to see the lovey-dovey, warm and fuzzy feeling for the ACC the BOT apparently came away with after meeting with Swofford.

among the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big 10 and Pac 10 sticking with 8 conference games. And the SEC according to SEC folks will probably go to 9 games in 2 or 3 years. That was mentioned in an article I read today. The 9 game issue is a big to do about nothing. Heck, cancel the So Car game if it's that much of a handicap.

that I felt like I wasn't coming close to getting my money's worth involving Clemson football. Presbyterian and the Temple game in Charlotte. I would have definitely seen better on field competition during our Orannge and White game. And we may have 2 of those type of games early in this year's schedule.

Re: No mention of the fact that the SEC is the only conference

Jul 22, 2012, 9:34 PM [ in reply to No mention of the fact that the SEC is the only conference ]

I'm not a big fan of the 9 game conference schedule. I see how it hurts schools like Clemson, FSU, etc. Not too many OU or Big 12 fans seem to hate it that much. Majority of the schools have their rivals in conference. I have to say that even with 9 games...OU still has ND this year and next, Tenn in 2014, 2015, Ohio State in 2016-2017, and LSU after that (of course things can change).

The Short Answer Is... Sacrifice A Cupcake!

Jul 22, 2012, 9:25 PM

Yes, its sad, but a cupcake must go... I know the Cupcake games are a socialist idea so that the a non FBS D-1 school may get a taste of FBS D-1 money... but the world is a hard, cruel place... and life is not fair. Plus it would make room for a noble opponent.

Not possible if we want to keep 7 home games which is

Jul 22, 2012, 10:50 PM

necessary these days. And any big time team will want to schedule home and home which would make it impossible to keep 7 home games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A home and home series with a team like UGA will generate

Jul 23, 2012, 8:03 AM

more money for CU-AD than 2 games vs teams like Furman.

There will only be 70,000 at a Furman game. (times 2 = 140,000 tickets sold). $35 for adult. $10 for kids.

There will be 82,000 at a UGA game. $70 per seat.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And I believe the gate is split.....

Jul 23, 2012, 9:14 AM

THUS, the argument that cupcakes generate more revenue since they are at home is mute, given the revenue generation of playing a top tier opponent, home or away... with no cupcake games, EVERY game will be important

I wish this topic was "mute" - it is getting to be

Jul 23, 2012, 9:23 AM

as irritating as the ACC/Big 12 issue. There is nothing as frustrating as having an argument about something that neither side in the discussion has any control over whatsoever.

Re: The Short Answer Is... Sacrifice A Cupcake!

Jul 23, 2012, 12:09 PM [ in reply to The Short Answer Is... Sacrifice A Cupcake! ]

Didn't you guys read what Tommy Bowden said???
A school NEEDS to schedule cupcakes so they can have games to fumble, have injuries, etc., and still win the game. It is a simple fact that no school can schedule 12 or 13 games of solid quality opponents and come out unscathed. The SEC schools sure do schedule cupcakes and they also have only 8 conference games for this very reason.
The obvious solution is to do what the premiere conference does, schedule 8 conference games.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But the ACC is weaker than the SEC. Syracuse is a cupcake.***

Another ACC decision that harms Clemson

Jul 22, 2012, 10:30 PM

Clemson, FSU, & GATech are significantly harmed, unlike the rest of the sorry ACC.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's a dumb idea for any ACC school, just more so for CU

Jul 22, 2012, 11:06 PM

Scheduling more conference games means more chances to lose games because facing comparable competition. If a team schedules 8 ACC games and 4 "winnable" out of conference games, much better chance to climb higher in polls, etc...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Significantly?? Actually it will help Clemson and FSU.

Jul 23, 2012, 4:38 AM [ in reply to Another ACC decision that harms Clemson ]

9 game schedule gives more talented teams a better chance to win division. Cream rises to top.

disadvantage to Clemson? By playoff time (2014), every conference (to include the SEC) will play 9 conference games. And most schools, will schedule one quality non-conference foe. What "problem" am I missing here?

We're friends. You laugh, I laugh. You cry, I cry. You jump off a bridge, I get in my boat and save your retarded a$$.

Clemson, FSU and GT have a definite disadvantage

Jul 23, 2012, 8:41 AM [ in reply to If every conference is going to 9 games, why is this a ]

we already have a "home-and-home" with a major conference team scheduled EVERY YEAR that others (like UNC, VT, etc. ) do not. So 10 of our games are set, when others have only 9.

With 5 away ACC games, that leaves us no wiggle room to play another major conf opponent and still have 7 home games every year. The years we play 4 away ACC games will be the year we play at SCAR.

Our only option if we are to schedule UGA or Auburn (any random team) in the future is to play 6 road/6 away games.

Simple math.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With SOS being a criteria to make the playoffs, UNC, VT, etc

Jul 23, 2012, 8:53 AM

are going to have to schedule at least one quality o-o-c opponent each year. There is no way around that unless they don't care about making the 4-team playoff. You know they care.

With the SEC going to 9 conference games, games with UGA and Auburn will be part of our memory bank rather than part of our future. The SEC schools will not want to play a tough o-o-c game if they have to play 9 conference games. And they don't need to. Frankly, we will need to count ourselves as fortunate if the CU-USC, GT-UGA and FSU-UF rivalry games survive a 9 conference game schedule. It's unfortunate. But, that's going to be a fact of college football life in the future.

So again, I don't see Clemson as being at any disadvantage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is not that much fun to watch Clemson fumble the ball,

Jul 23, 2012, 7:55 AM

turn it over, and play a lot of young guys who make mistake after mistake...but still walk a way with a win.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is the result of $$$ MONEY $$$$

Jul 23, 2012, 8:49 AM

The nine game schedule allows for more televised conference games. However, I do not believe it will improve the quality of games. Not too many people interested in a Duke or Wake game. I would have enjoyed a series with PITT or Syracuse in the past as an OCC game. Not sure now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't believe it will increase the revenues.

Jul 23, 2012, 1:04 PM

I just don't see ESPiN paying more to add Pitt and Cuse to the schedule.

Our top teams barely draw a primetime game on Saturday now.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only problem with 9 game schedule is Clemson's reaction to

Jul 23, 2012, 9:01 AM

it. Only shows we have joined the crowd who wants to win off the field instead of competing for a championship. Might as well pull for UNC if putting down other teams and winning politically is the only way we can compete.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't understand your comments at all.

Jul 23, 2012, 9:18 AM

Our objection is that our scheduling options are significantly impacted by this. I can't even connect what you said to the issue at hand.

"John Swofford said ... that he realizes how much programs like Clemson’s can be hurt by the new rules."
And I'm sure it makes that Jack-A Swofford happy. Anything to hurt Clemson. I notice none of the precious NC teams were on the 'might get hurt' list.
