Coach Koenning is an outstanding coach and greatly undervalued by most Clemson fans.

I could agree somewhat with that, but any man who whines and complains about not having a shot at the head coaching spot and just leaves well there is a reason he is at D coord. Like his ethics hate him as a person, no Clemson class!!!

Wake Forest ... 3rd and 22 ... from their own 1 yard line!!!

When we had Wake pinned on their own 1 yard line with like 3rd and 22 in a close game and let them get a first down in a up in Winston Salem shortly before Bowdens' ouster, that was all I needed to see.

Carolina is the wine and cheese school in the ACC. Nothing like a swiss cheese defense to go with it.

Top 25 defenses are not swiss cheese

I don't understand where people come up with this stuff. Please review his stats... compare them to Kevin Steele. Not knocking Coach Steele, but Koenning has better stats.

it appeared we conceded anything and everything until opponents reached the red zone, at which time we tightened up pretty good. It felt like we kept our opponents from scoring a lot of TDs, but our D was spending an awful lot of time on the field. I haven't been happy with Steele at times either as we have suffered from the same problem to a large extent; but the difference seems to me to be that Koenning's D was that way by design, while Steele's is more of a high-risk deal that if executed properly, at least gives our defense a chance to take over a game.

I don't think that you are taking into consideration that. The team that we have been playing the last cple of years, are better than the ones we were playing then. That is what I beleive anyway....

IMO good coach as long as he has a complimentary OC

He can hold a team below 25, but if it's close after the 3rd. you lose half the time

He was, but his defense was still ranked about top 5 or so. Illini offense was only scoring 7-11 pts/game.
Koenning wanted Dabo's job when Bowden left and didn't get it so he moved on. I like Steele but whould have been perfectly happy if Vic had stayed.

What are you talking about????? He didn't have an offense to put up 500 yards and 35 points a game to bail him out!!!!
Unfortunately, he never had that here either (unlike another DC..)..

in our 3 loses right?!?!?!?!?
Let's see our O avergaed 13 pts a game in our three losses so your saying Steele suffered the exact same problem Vic did in the losses.
Thanks

Koenning did better in scoring D & 3rd down D. Stats here..

There's a misperception that Koenning's D was softer and gave up more 3rd downs than Steele's D. The stats show otherwise...
In scoring defense Clemson ranked: 2011: #62 (Steele) 2010: #13 (Steele) 2009: #25 (Steele) 2008: #13 (Koenning) 2007: #10 (Koenning) 2006: #16 (Koenning) 2005: #11 (Koenning)
In 3rd down defense Clemson ranked: 2011: #58, 39.2% (Steele) 2010: #49, 38.5% (Steele) 2009: #64, 39.0% (Steele) 2008: #46, 37.2% (Koenning) 2007: #36, 36.0% (Koenning) 2006: #46, 36.3% (Koenning) 2005: #32, 35.2% (Koenning)
And lets not forget that Koenning did better than Steele with a terrible OC (Spence) who put the defense on the field way too much.
Maybe Dabo should have used his people & management skills to smooth over any personality issues and keep Koenning. Imagine if Dabo had kept Koenning and hired a good OC (like Malzahn) in 2009 with all that NFL talent on both sides of the ball. Wow!
But instead Dabo fired Koenning and hired his buddy, Napier as OC, even though Napier had no OC experience. Unforced rookie error. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2008/dec/02/clemsons_swinney_dismisses_defensive_coordinator_k/

You and that article ignore the problems that pre-existed between Swinney and Koenning. You can't hang that on Dabo.

to tangle.
Reportedly Koenning went to Dabo and asked if Dabo wanted him back in 2009. Dabo essentially said no. So apparently Koenning was willing to put aside any personal differences and stay. Why couldn't Dabo put aside personal differences and let Koenning stay? Bury the hatchet. It's business, not personal.
