He would make a good OC at a power 5 school. His future is very bright. I hope gets the opportunity.

he was a back up to Woody and then when he got the starting job he got beat out by Whitehurst.
He graduated in 3 years and went on to play at the Citadel for a year. He was/is very likable and has does well. Sometimes the next great QB's just do not pan out.

was a better QB. Who knows maybe if Willie didn't get scapegoated he would still be playing in the NFL, right?

Not saying Simmons would have went onto the NFL..

just stating he was a victim of Bowdens lack of an offense philosophy. This effected Whitehurst in his junior season. Main point is with Simmons it had more to do with the circumstances he was put in, rather than lack of ability.

exactly, while Whitehurst was an all time great for us, Bowden scapegoated Simmons...

For the losses in 2002. Whitehurst and Simmons were equal in arm strength. What people forget about the season was how weak the teams Whitehurst started against at the end of the season. And people forget how noncommittal Bowden was in the spring in naming a starter. Bowden made it look like Simmons still had a chance to win the job back in the spring. Bowden scapegoated Simmons the way he scapegoated Cullen Harper in the 2008 season. Simmons was more of a victim of circumstance than lacking ability. Simmons suffered from Bowdens lack of offensive philosophy, this also effected Whitehurst in his junior season.

Simmons was not as bad as some here made him out to be, and Whitehurst was not as great as some made him out to be. Looks like it ended up well for both in the long run, however.

You could also say he was a victim of circumstances...

The play calling and oline was terrible in 2002, and the season went south. First position to get a change when the season goes south is usually QB. Whitehurst got the last three starts of the season and did good, although we ended the season against some weak teams he played good enough to solidify his status as incoming starter for the 2003 season, and Simmons decide to transfer when Bowden was being noncommittal in stating who the starter was during the spring.

much better passes and several td's which Willie never did. He won the starting job that game! Charlie had a much stronger arm which got him ticket to long career in NFL. Willie was very smart, and did a reasonably good job, without that arm!

Willie Simmons went to Middle Tennessee State as offensive coach with Rick Stockstill. He coached there for quite a while but had some personal problems and had to resign. So good to see him back coaching again. He came in to Clemson with all AP courses in his senior year of HS and graduated in 3 years.
