Why would Clemson and ND not just wait and play on Jan 1?

Dec 14, 2020, 10:23 AM

All that can happen for either team are injuries. I get that teams want to win the conference championship, but who really cares at the end of the day. You would think that the teams would care more about being full strength for the playoff.

If Clemson wins, then we will just play again anyway on Jan 1 in the 2/3 game.
If ND wins, then we will very likely play again on Jan 1 in the 1/4 game.

Neither team has anything at all to gain. But, as a fan, I'm excited to watch the game and am glad that it isn't being cancelled! More football the better.

Under that scenario, ND would be crowned ACC Champions...

which cannot happen.

Also, Greg Sankey would have the sad.

I see that perspective from an unbiased viewpoint, but both teams want to win the championship that is right in front of them.

Also, if ND wins the game this Saturday they will finish the season at either 2 or 3 in the playoff rankings.

If Clemson wins, Clemson will be at either 2 or 3 and ND will sit at 4 unless something crazy happens.

If both Clemson and ND make the final 4, they will not be slotted against each other in the semifinal.

I think the most likely scenario with both in would be, Bama vs ND and Clemson vs OSU.

ND would for sure be the #1 seed if somehow (ain't happenin)

they beat Clemson twice.

The only question would be who gets the 3/4 spot out of Clemson, OSU, and A&M.

And I don't see any chance ND falls past 3 if their only loss is to Clemson.

Bama is staying #1 because they will be Florida by 20+. "Dominating the entire SEC" means too much to the committee.

ND would only fall to 4 to avoid playing Clemson in back-to-back games. It wouldn't necessarily be a ranking of teams but picking the 4 and then setting matchups.

Because ACC Championships matter. TV wants it too. ALso, college football is still sorting out who should be the Final 4 teams. If we lose we don't deserve to be there.

Why?
Because I think you are missing the point.
Sure the ACC Title is important, but for the CFP world ,you are missing the one key fact;
No team with 2 losses gets in. That is why Florida is out even if they beat Alabama.
So if Notre Dame beats us, we are out.
So Notre Dame has nothing to lose, but Clemson does.
