Why was the field so slick last night?

Dec 29, 2019, 11:56 PM

Don’t remember that being an issue in the other games we’ve had there.

I don't know how deep the soil is on that field since the field is wheeled in and out of the stadium to get enough sunlight to the grass. My guess not real deep as that is a lot of soil ..... guessing maybe a foot. I think you could guess that the root structure may not go quite as deep as outdoor fields and without a deeper root structure, footing would be much worse. Also, I don't know what kind of structural practices they use on the field, but without frequent aerifying, thatching (verticutting) and topdressing the Bermudagrass will get very thatchy causing too much moisture in the top inch or so of the turf ...... thus a wet surface which equals bad footing.

This guess is from experience sodding and sprigging multi-millions of square feet of Bermuda sod over many years. I could be wrong, but just a guess.

What he’s saying is.....there’s a hydrophobic layer in the soil that prevents water from leaching down from the surface.

Speculation from many was that because the field is natural grass and is kept outside most of the time to be grown and taken care of, once it's rolled inside into a different environment (temp/humidity) it gets slick. I'm not an expert, but that makes sense.

None of us a the on the field maintenance crew for the stadium so all of your answers will be educated (probably uneducated) guesses. Maybe moisture from indoor/outdoor temp and humidity changes....or OSU pissed themselves when they had deja vu of the last time they were in that stadium.

But none of the above explanations account for why it was only slick under the Ohio State players feet - except perhaps for the above mentioned theory that all Buckeyes pissed themselves when they remembered their 31-0 beating there 2 years ago.
