Why does women's college basketball get more t.v.

Feb 27, 2015, 2:07 PM

coverage and promoted more than college baseball? Is it political correctness? Social agenda? Something else? I can't imagine more people would want to watch women's college basketball over men's college baseball if they were promoted/covered equally.

Maybe because of the vast popularity of...

Rebecca "Lobocop" Lobo?

Or the excitement that is the WNBA?

Ummm... I think I'm all out of sarcasm on this subject. :(

Average attention span of an average TV viewer, probably

Feb 27, 2015, 3:15 PM

College Basketball: games last around 2 hours
College Baseball: games last around 3 to 3.5 hours.

You can also broadcast 2 basketball games for each baseball game = more viewers.

But this is all opinion, so . . . .

Uh I think that only happens in Columbia***

Both sports negotiate their regular season TV contracts at the conference level (in some cases at the school level).

Baseball has been having a harder time in general on TV

Feb 27, 2015, 5:02 PM

The games run long, even for fans who love the sport.

Also, if it weren't for my dad raising me around the sport, I don't think I'd get into it on my own. Most of my friends who don't know much about baseball didn't get much help from their families in learning it growing up.

It actually isn't even close. The 2014 Women's championship drew 3.21 million to the CWS highest rated game of 2.3 million. But that isn't really the biggest differential. The women's tournament drew an average audience size of over a million viewers per game for the entire tournament. The entire college baseball postseason only averaged 537,000 viewers per game. TV By the Numbers was my source.
