Why does everyone assume the conferences only want 12-14

I was just thinking today about everyone saying that Clemson needs to get on board or we will get left behind (and in theory I agree) and I started wondering why is that the case? What happens at 14 teams that prevents a conference from adding more teams? Seems like if a school was worthy of an invite (generates revenue) the conference would want to invite them regardless of how many teams they had.
However ideally 16 teams should be the goal for 8 super conferences. Then the championship game of each conference would be the first leg of a playoff bracket. If common sense were common, everyone would have it. Very few on tnet do as their heads are usually up their @$$.
